Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

There are between 20,000 and 30,000 species of orchids; they are found on every continent except Antarctica, and 79 percent of them are epiphytes (plants that grow on other plants). The work of 12 contributors and boasting color photographs on every page, this informative book clearly explains orchid classification and naming systems, and offers a gardener's guide to orchid conservation. Most of the book is devoted to an encyclopedia organized by orchid genus or by alliance, a group of genera that share many common characteristics and can be interbred. An introduction to each genus and alliance is written by an expert on the group, followed by detailed growing tips regarding such essentials as light, temperature, water, humidity, fertilizing, potting, and what is termed cut-down, that is, reducing the height of mature plants.
