Format: Paperback
I love books that give me the feeling for what a country is like while giving me a story about a person who I can care about. "Orchids of Venezula" was like that for me; I didn't want to put it down! From the opening when the forces of the coup are bombing the airport, through backflashes into Tamara Mata's interesting life and romances, I wanted to keep reading to see how it would all turn out. In the process, I got a good sense of what life in Venezuela has been like during my lifetime (I'm also a middle-aged mother) and the recent history that has led this complex, oil-rich country to its current instability.
