Book Description

August 25, 2003 0911221263 978-0911221268 First Edition
Cultural Writing. Great routes, great writing. It was a special time, this Golden Age of Yosemite climbing. Virgin walls soared 3,000 feet. Immense pinnacles had golden eagles atop them, but no cairns. The phrase "kids in a candy store" springs to mind. Excited by such possibilities, climbers who barely knew what they were up against swarmed up new routes, and then, as if to further savor their adventures, put pen to paper. Steve Roper presents fifty-four selections that represent the most interesting and significant literary output about Yosemite climbing from its beginnings, in 1933, until 1974. Sixty-seven photographs and illustrations.

This review is from: Ordeal by Piton: Writings from the Golden Age of Yosemite Climbing (Paperback)
Climbing runs from routine to audacious. Here Steve Roper has gathers together accounts of some of the most audacious climbers and climbs ever. Yosemite in the Golden Age, as recorded by the climbers who made that age what it was.

The photographs show you the place. The accounts show you the people. Read and remember when you were there or read and then visit the Valley.

Climbing has entered a new phase. Technique, training, and better gear have moved ahead. Now those pushing the envelope are doing bold solo climbs at high altitude (Steve House, in Pakistan, among other examples). But this collection will give you a sense of how we got to where we are today and of the people who helped push things forward form the 1940s to the 1970s.

Amazing tales, nicely brought together. Read and enjoy it. And keep on climbing.
