From Chapter 1: "Your mother was married when you were born, Jean. You have a sister who is three years older than you. Your mother's husband was in the service, and they were separated. She had an affair, and your were conceived. She was in hopes of marrying your father, but when he learned that she was pregnant, he left town. Then your mother had no other choice but to give you up for adoption. She did what she thought was best for you". Excerpt from a conversation I had, at age sixteen, with the Nun who handled my adoption.
