2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Quality, July 25, 2004

This review is from: Mail Order! Catalog Clip Art of the Forties, Fifties and Sixties (Paperback)
This was disappointing. I have a library of clip art books, and thought this would make a great new addition. I wasn't happy when it arrived. The quality is rather poor, and I felt kind of ripped off. The pictures were badly reproduced--they are fuzzy and the quality is atrocious, especially for pictures that are supposed to be scanned and copied for reproduction! You can see the halftone patterns on many of the pictures. They look as if they were scanned directly from a newspaper or magazine without any kind of filter to compensate for this.

The selection wasn't even that good. Most of the images are large, meaning that there aren't that many items on each page. There just seems to be a lot lacking here in selection.

I also found it irritating that even though these are copyright free, the publisher puts more stringent conditions on their usage and on how many you can use in a project than, say, Dover does. It just seems nasty on top of the already blurry slim pickings the book offers. It's a shame, because it's a great idea. I actually would have loved to have used quite a few of the images that are in here. However, the quality wasn't good enough, or only marginally so if I spend quite a bit of time fiddling in Photoshop.
