Book Description

January 1999 Adept Series
History comes alive in this fascinating story of the descent of the secret doctrine of antiquity in Europe from the collapse of the Pagan Mysteries to the end of the Age of Chivalry. The account begins with Manes, whose philosophy has survived into modern times as the impelling force behind Christian Mysticism. The glory of the Guilds unfolds the traditions of the first organization to put into solemn practice the concept of the brotherhood of man. The troubadour, minnesinger, and meistersinger are considered, as well as the troubled story of the Knights Templar of Jerusalem.

Taliesin, the Adept of Britain, finds his proper place in the descent of the wisdom of the Druids and the secret assemblies of Wales. Through Merlin, the magician, the reader meets King Arthur and there is an interpretation of the Round Table legendry. The wonderful stories of the Holy Grail, the Grail Kings, Parsifal, and Lohengrin are discussed, as well as early Christian contacts with China and other Eastern lands. The account ends with the search for the mysterious temple of Shamballah, said to stand on the Imperishable Island in the midst of the Gobi Desert in Mongolia. Illustrated.

From the Publisher

The Philosophical Research Society is a nonprofit organization founded in 1934 for the purpose of assisting thoughtful persons to live more graciously and constructively in a confused and troubled world. The Society is entirely free from educational, political, or ecclesiastical control. Dedicated to an idealistic approach to the solution of human problems, the Society's program stresses the need for the integration of religion, philosophy, and the science of psychology into one system of instruction. The goal of this instruction is to enable the individual to develop a mature philosophy of life, to recognize his proper responsibilities and opportunities, and to understand and appreciate his place in the unfolding universal pattern.

About the Author

Manly P. Hall was the founder of the Philosophical Research Society. In over seventy-five years of dynamic public activity, he delivered more than 8,000 lectures in the United States and abroad, and authored countless books, essays, and articles. In his lectures and writings, Manly Hall always emphasized the practical aspects of philosophy and religion as they applied to daily living. He restated for modern man those spiritual and ethical doctrines which have given humanity its noblest ideals and most adequate codes of conduct. Believing that philosophy is a working tool to help the individual in building a solid foundation for his dreams and purposes, Manly Hall steadfastly sought recognition of the belief that world civilization can be perfected only when human beings meet on a common ground of intelligence, cooperation, and worthy purpose.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK but need background...., September 26, 2000
This review is from: Orders of the Quest, The Holy Grail (Adept Series) (Paperback)
I think that this book was ok as far as the knowledge that it holds within. It really made me think about what I was reading. The part that really caught my attention was the song of Taliesin the second paragraph it reads "I was with my lord in the highest sphere, on the fall of Lucifer into the depths of hell; I have borne a banner before Alexander; I know the name of the stars from north to south." Just that paragraph alone has a lot of meaning to it. But if you don't know what you are reading then you will over look that paragraph for sure.

What I don't like about this book is that the author just expects you to understand what he is talking about without going into any details on it. For example the author talks about a lot of people but doesn't tell us who some of the people are. I do believe that if I knew the history that I would better understand the book and what the author is talking about.
