Book Description

The world is set to explode in three months.

The source: a lonely girl with an extreme superpower fueled by the negative emotions inside her.

The solution: send fourteen year old superhero-in-training Kale Zenith to be her friend and give her a reason to smile.

The problem? The girl trusts no one.

With the fate of the world in Kale’s hands, quitting is not an option. Perseverance is key to knocking down the many walls around her, and soon he gets to know Lindsay as more than just the girl who will destroy the planet.

But there’s trouble back home. A secret plot is brewing inside his superhero League, and it’s up to Kale to expose the traitor. But that takes time away from Lindsay when she needs him most. Can he save her and the world before it’s too late?

3.0 out of 5 stars No, Rather Ordinary. June 9, 2014
By Roiet
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Cabbage Zenith is the son of the world's two greatest heroes - Samsung Zenith (tm) and Psionist. (Or something like that.) Prepared from birth to lead the Justice League of Extraordinary Heroes, it's no surprise that he is the only one possible to take on a mission that might save the world - or doom the Universe!

Only problem: Cabbage has no superpowers. Oh, and one other problem: He's a self-centered, immature, lazy, fourteen year-old jerk who is fairly unsympathetic and has a mean, unfunny sense of humor. And the mission: to charm a traumatized teenage girl with a horrid life into being sufficiently happy enough that she doesn't lose it and inadvertantly blow up the world. Thank goodness it's a story and he's predestined to win, or else we'd really want to get moving on that bucket list.

Cabbage's persistence and insensitive comments eventually wear down Plot Device Girl and she falls in love with him - although given her terrible life and +10 Power-Based Acne of Repulsion, she was probably primed to fall for anyone who showed interest in her. (Fortunately, the imaginatively-named superhero named "Healer" heals her acne, making her suddenly h0t.) One somewhat disjointed kidnapping-slash-traitor sideplot later, Plot Device Girl is now emotionally stable, Cabbage has new superpowers, and happiness awaits!

Really, it's not bad, but it's never more than decent. And as you can tell, I really didn't like the main character. I know it's a somewhat of a coming-of-age story, and he's got to start off disadvantaged in some way so that he can grow up and become a man, but he still needs to be sympathetic and he's not. Some of the action scenes were good, and it was a light, easy read. But the book still doesn't sit well with me a couple days later and I'm not interested in reading the sequel. That means three stars.

Fortune Cookie Says: A reader's time is valuable. You may wish to spend it elsewhere.

3.0 out of 5 stars Its ok. May 19, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I liked the premise of the book and maybe it is that I'm not the target audience, that is, male reader over 30, but I found the dialogue to be a bit infantile. I've ready young adult fiction before and I've seen where the writer communicates the age of the protagonist without forcing you to wade through "teenage" dialogue. Also, the main character just seemed a little one dimensional to me. All in all, I read it and I wouldn't say its a waste of money (since you can borrow for free on your kindle or but for $2.99), but don't think I will be buying the next book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a fun read! February 12, 2013

I really, really enjoyed this book! I wasn't sure what to expect. It had a very X-Men feel to it, but with younger characters. The voice of Kale was one I never got tired of and each character was well drawn with unique traits and issues they were dealing with. I thought the author did a great job at adding layers to all of them and giving them their own dinstinct vibe and feel. No character sounded like another, which is hard to pull off when you have so many different ones. I thought the subplots were well done and I loved how they all interconnected to the overarching theme/plot of the story. I always love a good romance and this didn't fail to deliver. I love how hard Lindsey made things for Kale. There was no instalove here. The transition felt very organic and authentic to the given circumstances. I LOVED Stretch. He was definitely the comic relief for me and gave me some real laugh out loud moments. And X. Ahhhhh. X. I LOVED LOVED LOVED him. What can I say? I love a boy who is flawed and damaged and a little rough around the edges but loyal to the end. The relationship between the three boys reminded me of the relationship between the boys in John Green's Papertowns, which was my favorite part of that book. And it was my favorite part of this one. Everything just worked for me with this novel. The writing was great, the characters fantastic, and the plot was one that kept me turning the pages. It was a very quick read, and I'm very, very excited this is part of a series. Can't wait to find out what happens next!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing May 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Don't know why I chose, but glad I did. The only thing that bothered me sometimes were how quickly there emotions change. One minute he's choking someone and the next he's having a civilized discussion with them. A tad bit unrealistic, but in a book about superheroes that's expected. Still doesn't take away much of the truly great moments in the book that will have you up for hours glued to page after page.
