Solid first collection, April 21, 2010
This review is from: Ordinary Mourning (Paperback)
This lovely collection echoes in the spirit of Kyrie and Spoon River Anthology, sorting out the voices of the dead and those they haunt. The poems craft a range of voices that emit strained composure, layered fear, and the alternation between disparate emotions. Some poems may take their inspiration from history or contemporary events, but their relevance is equal. A mother recognizes "Already / people are impatient with me and my grief. / They need me to prove they, too, could survive / the worst that could happen." Another speaker realizes the need to establish belief for "when the living fail / me for the last time." Carrie Shipers spins a calm, careful thread of poems, resulting in a first book that is nothing ordinary.
