Book Description

An Ordinary Man's Extraordinary Tale of Courage and the Will to Live

Ordinary Valor is not a textbook about prostate cancer or the psychology of coping, although you'll find author Robert Mignone's thoughts on both. It's not a philosophical discourse on the philosophy of faith or the existence of God, although Mignone does talk a lot about his experience of the power of faith. Rather, Ordinary Valor invites the reader to witness one man's journey of coping with the dark reality of cancer. Mignone writes:

Because my story has been ordinary, I've come to regard my experience as remarkable (even spectacular) because I've seen how it has reflected the marvelous journeys of gazillions of men and women as they've worked and loved and managed their lives as best they could and all the while no one but their intimates knowing anything of their heartaches. They've attended PTA meetings, grooved at concerts, visited families, and showed up at work every day with their game faces on and never received a medal or a news story. That's amazing. All over the world, people are quietly winning gold medals of the heart. That's the human grit, which more than ever brings tears of admiration to my eyes. Celebrities or even unsung heroes may be entertaining and sometimes inspirational, but even more awesome is every man's bouncing back. To me, they're all heroes and heroines.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you, July 30, 2007

This helped men understand the male point of view in going through a crisis like cancer. We women talk more about our trials with health. But this went beyond that to a more universal account of a journey through a health crisis. It was both helpful and inspirational. The fact that Dr. Mignone shared his humanness first, and then the knowledge of a psychiatrist added to my interest and benefit. Thank you, Dr., for being candid. H.O. Sarasota, Fl.

This review is from: Ordinary Valor: How Prostate Cancer Saved My Life and How You Can Save Yours (Paperback)
As a cancer survivor reading this book I wished that it had been available when I went through my own recovery.

Most of us will suddenly learn of a cancer, or come face-to-face with heart disease, or some other life-threatening condition, and when we do Dr. Robert Mignone's words contain great lessons that can help all of us.

What he learned in all his years of medical practice only partly prepared him for his own brush with the angels wings. Strangely he found his cancer to be a gift and his book shows us how love and faith can give us the will and courage, not only to survive, but to blossom.

A beautifully written account of recovery and a prescription for calling upon our inborn abilities that can help us cope and promote our spiritual healing, when faced with our own crisis.

This review is from: Ordinary Valor: How Prostate Cancer Saved My Life and How You Can Save Yours (Paperback)
Dr. Mignone writes from his heart and in so doing teaches the rest of us how to live our lives finding the true meaning of life.... This is a book for all peoples from cancer warriors to cancer survivors to those fortunate not to have those words applied to them. It is a book that will serve for generations as a teaching that goes beyond medical practice or the classroom and right into our earthly lives. Thank you, Dr. M, for your gracious honestly. You truly are the compassinate healer. B. McCormack, Kalkaska, MI
