5.0 out of 5 stars Works Well, January 4, 2009

This review is from: Oregon Gator Mulcher 3-N-1 Lawn Mower Blade For AYP/Poulan 21-3/32-Inch 95-921 95-621 (Lawn & Patio)
I have use this blade now for the past two years on my Craftsman mower. I can now mulch since this blade will chop up the grass in such small pieces that it usually will not lay on top of the lawn (exception is when the grass damp or pretty long).

Original blade would never work well enough to ever mulch my grass. I have learned over the past two years to mow more often like @ 20% sooner then you would when bagging an this has eliminated the clumping problem. I have a hunch that the blade would work better on a different mower but have no proof of it till I buy ANYTHING other than a Sears mower.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gator Mulcher on a Craftsman lawn mower, October 19, 2011

This review is from: Oregon Gator Mulcher 3-N-1 Lawn Mower Blade For AYP/Poulan 21-3/32-Inch 95-921 95-621 (Lawn & Patio)
Since it was time to sharpen my blade I decided to buy a spare for my Craftsman lawn mower. After doing a lot of research online, I purchased the "precision cut" blade from Sears Parts. I found that it cut the same as the original and decided to do more research and purchased this one.. Most of the reviews that I found were touchy feely (ie. I felt that this worked better etc.) but did not tell me why this blade worked better than the original. I thought that I would point out what I observed. Most of the newer lawn mowers come with a high lift mulcher blade installed. The manufacturer achieved this by offsetting the cutting edge so that only 2" of cutting blade actually touches the lawn and rest of the cutting edge is bent upwards to a higher level to recut the loose grass. The high lift is achieved by a 15 degree bend at the tail end of the blade causing lift like a fan.

On the other hand, Oregon does it differently. First, the cutting edge is straight across the blade for about 4.5". More than twice the cutting surface making for a more even cut. This is more like the older lawnmowers and is quite obvious in the appearance of the final cut. They achieve the mulching effect by the vertical cutting edges on the rear of the blade (see picture). Since these cutters are raised, they also provide the fan lift effect.

Other observations: The blade was a little long for my lawnmower (hitting the shroud). I had to remove (grind off) about 3/32" from the outer edge. However, I also had to do this with the Sears blade. If you have the tools and skill, this is quite easy. Just take a little off each side at a time and repeat. If you take the same amount each time you will need very little balancing if any. As stated elsewhere, this is a thick and heavy blade. I feel that this adds to the flywheel effect causing it to run smoother. This new blade felt like it was dull when I got it. I found that this is because the Powder Coat paint is so thick that it protected the sharp edge. It wears away quite quickly from the edge after a little use.

I also have to say something about Amazon. They are one of the only internet shippers that Box everything. Even the lawn mower blade was boxed. I've receive many things from others that just stuck a shipping label on the retail box. I got so tired of waiting for the free shipping that I signed up for "Prime" shipping. Now stuff arrives in two days.

I am very pleased with this blade and will buy another in the future.

I hope someone finds this useful.

I started using these blades 2 seasons ago after reading some glowing reviews of them. Well, they are great blades, for little more than the garbage ones cost. They cut really well, the edge lasts a while, and the aggressive design makes quick work of heavy overgrowth. Recommended.

Used this blade for first year on a 8+ HP Sears mower. It cuts grass well, small pieces even in tall grass. We chop a lot of leaves to use for mulch. The Sears mower replaced a 20+yr old Snapper that was very good at that. The lower power Snapper picked up just about any stick you could push the mower over. I don't get that kind of vacuum effect with this mower and blade combo. The blade does vacuum better than the OEM blade. If you want a lot of vacuum this blade will make a step in that direction but it won't do it on it's own.

Best mulching blade I have used. Very heavy blade, which improves the final cut. Also does well with leaves if you set the mower level higher.

I emailed the manufacturer through their website, they were quick to respond with needed information.

5.0 out of 5 stars My second Oregon blade...Great!, August 5, 2011

I love this blade. The cutting is nice and even, the vacuum is very noticably increased and the clippings come out looking like dust. This is a blade that I will buy again and again...as long as they will make it, I will use it. I convinced my son to try one ; he was complaining about his mower's cutting performance and thinking of buying a new mower. We put it on his mower and he is as happy as I am with the performance of this blade. I am a very experienced mower,(I'm old), and have used many different mower blades in my lifetime. I have never seen a performer like this one. I have used the blade for the Summer of 2011 only, so I can't speak to its longevity prospects. But it is made of thick and sturdy material and seems as though it would last a good while. So far, so good for me. It shows no signs of wear yet. If you want to resharpen your own blade, then I would recommend another Oregon blade I used just before this, their Universal Mulching blade. It also receives a 5 star rating from me...The Gator Mulching blade has an unusual design which would perhaps make resharpening at home difficult unless you are using files to do so. A grinder won't do it very well. I will simply replace mine when it begins to dull. It is well worth the price to me. Happy mowing!
