this thing does it all, and is one of the better looking units from oregon scientific. they really need to fire their industrial designer because most of the products look dorky.
i have had no problems with the base unit or the remote transmitter, it can even transmit from inside my freezer! the only issue i have is i wish the back light stayed on longer (or at least as long as the back light button is pressed). i highly recommend this unit.

Does what it should- but needs new batteries...,

This review is from: Oregon Scientific BAR898HGA Long Range Weather Forecaster with Thermometer (Kitchen)
I must have had 8 windows open for electronic weather stations before picking this one.
I got this unit along with an extra remote sensor. When I took the plastic tab out to allow the batteries to make contact and the units came on... ...they all had a different temp even after 10 minutes of being right next to each other. We're talking as much as 4 degrees difference and 7% difference on the humidity. Got all new name brand batteries and put them in. Now the temps are within a degree of each other. Why this would make a difference, I'm not sure- but it did. In fact, the base unit nearly synchs up exactly with a cheaper unit I got 2yrs ago. It looks pretty good and I'm getting this as a Bday present for a friend. Give this unit a shot, but be sure to get 6 new AA batteries!

I am really impressed how the weather forecast feature REALLY works ! I live in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and bought one of these for my father - who is an engineer. He LOVES it ! Will buy another one for myself next time I go to the US !

Follow the simple instructions and it's perfect!,

This review is from: Oregon Scientific BAR898HGA Long Range Weather Forecaster with Thermometer (Kitchen)
I've read the comments claiming that the sensors don't communicate with the base unit. Well, if you don't follow the simple instructions (place the base unit near the sensor and press 'reset' on the sensor), it won't. If you do follow the instructions, however, it works like a charm. I live in Bermuda, VERY far from the atomic clock, and in a concrete house. The clock syncs nicely and picks up the readings from throughout the house and outside perfectly, even through several concrete walls, double-pane windows, and several meters of space in between. The temp and humidity readings are reasonably close from one sensor to another in the same place, so the calibration is acceptable for all but scientific purposes, the sensors hold up well in the heat and torrential rains of Bermuda, and the batteries last fairly long. It's even got a low battery warning. The clock sync does take some time, but be patient, it'll work.
As for customer service, I called OS a long time after purchasing this, looking for new brackets for the sensors (mine had gone missing), and without hesitation, for FREE - not even shipping - they were sent right along. Now THAT is excellent support! In all, I highly recommend this unit.

Great Weather Station,

My weather station works great, everything seems to be dead on accurate. The remote sensor works further away then I thought it would, way out in our backyard. It's probably about 100 feet away and is outside the house. It doesn't have any problem with rain hitting it like I thought it might. Anyone who needs a weather station with the features this has will be happy with this purchase!

Talk about a great weather station at a great price! Very simple to set up (took me under 5 minutes to set up). Looks great and the remote sensor can be placed up to 300 feet away from the main unit (this unit can take up to 3 remote sensors). I highly recommend this weather station.

Overall durable, but some features lacking,

This weather gauge does measure temperature and time accurately, however the weather forecaster is vague and we never know if the weather it is predicting is supposed to indicate the weather right now, later that day, or maybe even the next day. The unit suggests that the predictions are for 12 to 24 hours in advance, but this doesn't help very much when the weather is being volatile and we want exact predictions to prepare for weather that night or for the next morning. The weather forecast can also be extremely inaccurate, as the unit only has about five different weather settings and `partially cloudy' seems to cover anything from almost completely sunny to the verge of thunderstorms. On the plus side, the outdoor sensor has held up very well under heavy rain and the clock does an excellent job synchronizing itself.

Good toy but not plug-and-play,

This is a good toy, giving one glance referrence what is happening indoors and outdoors with temperature and humidity. The alarm is working fine, weather forecast is pretty reliable.
However this toy is not plug-and-play. One can expect that it's atomic clock radio signal synchronization feature will take care of time settings, at least within the first hour after switching this clock on. However it takes more than 24 hours (and user manual is keen in this point) for the clock to fetch the radio signal and synchronize itself. I do not know why so much time is needed, but it make you set up the time and date when starting using this clock as much the same as with any dumb clock. The weather station comes with one remote sensor. I have bought second sensor later. However after I have set it on the unused channel and switched sensor on, the weather staion could not establish connection with this additional sensor until it was reset. And this means going through all the clock etc. setting once again. I would expect such advanced toy to be little more smart in settings than it is.

This is a great piece, we haven't had any problems with it. At first it wasn't able to pick up a signal for the atomic clock, but when we moved it closer to a window it set itself.

Great weather station.
Buyer alert: Don't buy the THC138 if you need a water remote probe; only the THC268 is compatible with this weather station. |
