5.0 out of 5 stars Indoor outdoor temperatures - accurate and precise!
I ordered mine and it arrived per USPS in about 3 days!
This is a replacement for a liquid indoor outdoor thermometer that died. Installation was easy - hung it on a screw on my kitchen door, routed the external sensor (on a generous 12 foot line secured by staples) by the door hinges - no wires show inside. Calibration:- internal and external agree and concur with...

2.0 out of 5 stars Only lasted 2 years
Our unit lasted about 2 years then failed to show the outdoor temperature. (I see some other people have had the same problem with similar models.) The unit is consistently off by a few degrees, as well. Why on earth would you want to see fractions of a degree if the accuracy is +/- 2 degrees? On the other hand, the display is very easy to read. Just don't plan on...

I have had four of these devices. At heart they are a great idea. But if you don't want to hang it on the wall and wish to use the stand, you may have some problems.

Do not put this unit on a window ledge or anywhere else where the sun will fall on it regularly. The screens start to lose some of the display and they become useless. The one I have that has stayed out of the sun is still working. The other three did not make it a year before developing trouble.

While working, these units did give accurate readings, but the durability of unit make it a poor buy unless you can keep the unit isolated.

I purshased this item and am extremely disappointed. It is consistently 4.5-6.2 degrees off from the correct indoor temperature as displayed by my Skyscan Atomic Clock. The outdoor temperature display is no more accurate. Save your money, don't bother with this inferior item.

This is a replacement for a liquid indoor outdoor thermometer that died. Installation was easy - hung it on a screw on my kitchen door, routed the external sensor (on a generous 12 foot line secured by staples) by the door hinges - no wires show inside. Calibration:- internal and external agree and concur with a third liquid thermometer. I had been concerned by possible issues of accuracy - no problem there! And none with precision. In use, the controls are simple min/max toggles and reset. The display is easy to read across a room.
And all for $10 in Dec 2004 - what value!

Disappointing performance and durability. Temperature always an approximation. Died after 20 months and glad to see it go. Won't buy Oregon Scientific again.

I bought two of these units a few years ago and both have now exhibited the same problem with segments of the numbers intermittently disappearing. At first this can be fixed by removing the batteries then replacing them some minutes later, but eventually both of the units would only display gibberish.

I really like the functionality and the large display, but having two units with identical malfunctions has caused me to replace them with something other than an Oregon Scientific product.

This unit appears to be a bargain: it's inexpensive, and my sample displayed the correct temperature within a half a degree. But installing the little wire underneath my window sliced it right off... Next time I'm getting the wireless version.

1.0 out of 5 stars bad Model EM899, October 22, 2008

After 2 years the display started losing parts of the numbers. Once in a while it would all come back, but for most of the time the numbers were unreadable. I called the factory but in so many words said, tough luck. They did not offer to replace the unit. Do not buy this Oregon Scientific product. It is the usual POS that is made in China.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid Oregon Scientific Devices!, December 31, 2007
This review is from: Oregon Scientific EM899 Indoor/Outdoor Thermometer with Jumbo Display (Kitchen)
My recent experience with Oregon Scientific weather devices in general lead me to agree with the previous reviewers here. The accuracy of the temperature readings is consistently off by from 2º- 4º even between side-by-side (base and remote sensor) comparisons. I will soon be evaluating, side-by-side, base and remote humidity sensors (as I bought a remote sensor with temp and humidity sensing BEFORE I REALIZED HOW INACCURATE even the temp sensors were) but given the "simple" temp inaccuracies I suspect the humidity readings will vary even more disturbingly. These units ship with REALLY, REALLY PATHETIC instructions. The website offers NO additional HELP with set up or technical questions and there is no way to calibrate the sensors to adjust for their wide variation inaccuracies. Radio connections between base and remotes is tricky at best, with whacky connection dropouts even when the sensor/base locations have not changed! These "instruments" are a joke - at a premium price. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Display Started Losing Parts of the Numbers., October 26, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Oregon Scientific EM899 Indoor/Outdoor Thermometer with Jumbo Display (Kitchen)
Hi,
I had bought 3 of these. I used one outside and Two inside. I use the Air Conditioner in the summer, so the Display was not exposed to any high humidity. After 2 Months the display on ALL of them started losing parts of the numbers. Once in a while some may come back, but for most of the time the numbers were unreadable.
Do not buy them.
Thank you, John.
