5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to use and read, December 13, 2009

I have owned an Oregon Scientific thermometer before and I was interested to see if my THR268 sensor would work with this unit. It does, it is not the modern sensor that comes with the unit that displays humidity so that part of the reading is blank but it does display the temperature.

I have a two bedroom apartment and I do try and keep each room at one consistent temperature on top of tracking the temperature outside and this one unit provides a centralized location for me to check each room's temperature throughout the day.

With the cold weather here in Washington causing static electricity within the apartment, I was able to track the humidity percentage in the main room after putting on a pot of water. Works like a charm!

The weather picture indicator isn't always accurate but that seems so minimal compared to the reason why I purchased the unit and it provides a good laugh or paniced pause when it says that it snowing and it isn't.

The package comes with several colorful indicator labels that simply click into the hard plastic screen (you either use the ones that are provided or you write your own). A battery is provided for power back-up to the rechargeable battery that is also provided. I received the unit while it was raining so it took me a few days before I could put it outside but once a non-rainy overcast day came, I left it out all day and I haven't had to recharge it since. Also in the box was one sensor that you put outside and another to put in a room that displays the temperature and humidity percentage on the sensor as well as the main unit indicator; the main unit also displays the sensors battery level. You can have up to four sensors and if you don't have four sensors, the bottom two areas can be used for date and time. The instructions said it could take up to 24 hours to receive the time from Colorado but it was accurate within seconds. The main unit numbers are large and could be read by someone who might need larger print.

I purchased this item blind back in October, no reviews only my trust in the manufacture, and I'm very pleased with my purchase.

This unit seems to lock onto atomic clock signals much faster (maybe has more sensitive antenna) than previous Oregon Scientific weather units that I've own over the past several years. The display has very large numbers. Recharging feature is a plus, but we'll have to see how long the rechargeable battery lasts. Lastly, this includes both one outdoor and one indoor sensor. What a bonus!

4.0 out of 5 stars no plug in necessary, September 10, 2010

I actually sent the solar thermometer to my dad for a Christmas gift and he said he liked it so much he got one for me too. Both were bought on Amazon.com of course. The only difficulties I had was finding a tiny screwdriver to remove the battery cover for outside unit, my dad complained of this also, not a huge deal though.I live in the high desert of the northwest which doesn't rain much at all.The thermometer tends to predict rain 3 days in advance, once we figured that out it actually came in handy for pre planning our trips.didn't mind that either.I set it outside in the sun about once a month to keep it charged up.I also love that you can keep track of multiple rooms at a time.Seems to be right on with the temps.I have no buyers remorse for what I paid for it which was about $70 or $79.00 I dont remember.Have had it for about a year now and still love it. I would definitely recommend it to others, especially since it's plug free.SOLAR POWER ROCKS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, January 9, 2010

This is versatile, reliable system and saves me from having to go to other rooms throughout the house to check temperatures. It is an expandable system which allowed me to place sensors throughout the house. The fact that it operates on solar and battery back up makes it even better.

I would recoomend this to anyone looking for a reliable, informative weather station.

1.0 out of 5 stars A LITTLE WARNING, January 16, 2012

WARNING............WARNING.....WARNING........................

I bought a weather station here, and it worked fine for 6 months,, then only the inside temperature and clock worked, all other features were gone.
I called Oregon Scientific, and they said.....sorry THE service they were using to sync with the weather station i bought went out of business, and now i have only a $100 clock.
So any weather stations they sell now DO NOT HAVE THE FULL FUNCTIONS, and since mine is 6 months old......sorry they have anything to replace it with, and won't take it back for another model.
IN OTHER BEWARE OF WHAT YOU BUY THAT IS BRANDED "Oregon Scientific"...YOU MAY BE PAYING A LOT OF MONEY FOR A "CLOCK" AND NO WEATHER.

I guess i am fortunate that i bought it on Amazon, since they are looking into a refund after verfying the info from........ OREGON UN-SCIENTIFIC

1.0 out of 5 stars Outdoor sensor does not work, December 5, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Oregon Scientific RMR500ESA Clima-Control Solar Powered Climate Monitor and Weather Forecaster with Mold Alert (Kitchen)
The outdoor sensor did not work at all, so I'm returning the product. The main unit always displays "HH" for outdoor temperature and 50% for outdoor humidity. All other features (indoor sensor and clock) worked perfectly.

2.0 out of 5 stars Oregon Scientific Weather Monitor, January 24, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Oregon Scientific RMR500ESA Clima-Control Solar Powered Climate Monitor and Weather Forecaster with Mold Alert (Kitchen)
The monitor is accurate as compared to three other "monitors". The time has yet to syn with a "radio controlled" source. However, manually setting is no problem and the clock is also accurate. Keeps accurate time.

But, the monitor itself if very, very hard to read/see/view even with the larger numbers because the window/glass is tinted so much that from a distance you can't read it. Its like trying to see in the back of a car with tinted windows. If it were clear glass and not tinted, it would be great.

Although it has pluses, I would not purchase this again.

2.0 out of 5 stars Useless just after 3 months..., January 9, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Oregon Scientific RMR500ESA Clima-Control Solar Powered Climate Monitor and Weather Forecaster with Mold Alert (Kitchen)
I bought this weather station for its anywhere in the house location convenience not necessarily needing an outlet nearby due to the solar charging perk.

It worked as it was expected on the first 3 months. Then after many overcast winter days without any sun shine, the discharge green led started blinking to the point the unit just ran out of battery power and screen went blank. On the first sunny day, I left the unit for several hours recharging just to find weird readouts and as I pressed the "reset" button on the battery compartment the screen just kind of "froze" on this mode. All the characters on the screen are displayed, the background light is fully lit. All this, making the unit useless.

Then emailed cust. support, they sent instructions after 3 days to resit the batteries and reset the unit, but to no avail. Same issue reoccurred, then I got a response 7 days after the issue started stating: "It might be possible that you have a faulty sensor/unit. If you are within the 1 year warranty, we can replace that for you". After no further replies and now on the 3rd week; I called in just to learn this unit is discontinued and the replacement will be a lesser priced model, supposedly with same functionality. Two more weeks to find out :/

Bought to replace an older similar unit from another manufacturer. I was very happily surprised by the quality of this base unit. WAY easier to install than my older unit. Tracks up to four sensors... I'm tracking three presently on mine. Love it.

Very Satisfied.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great idea, December 1, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Oregon Scientific RMR500ESA Clima-Control Solar Powered Climate Monitor and Weather Forecaster with Mold Alert (Kitchen)
We use solar power and thought this a great idea. However, in northern Montana,in the winter the only way to get enough sunlight on this is to set it in a window.......but then could not see the display because of the back light. You can charge it with AC, but it does not come with a power transformer.

Liked the idea of being able to monitor different sites and this worked well. It was easy to set up and the atomic clock is a great idea. I think the next model of this will be 5 star.

Pros: solar, compact but with a large screen. can monitor several different areas

Cons: Had to buy and AC charger, screen is a bit cluttered with the labels, backlight does not stay on, hard to read with low light or backlighting.
