5.0 out of 5 stars Pool Sensor
I bought this so I could see the temp of our pool. It works great and very accurate. Had it in pool for 2 years and still looks brand new and no apparent harm caused to it from the chlorine. It has a big readout so you can se temp from pool side and or in the pool. My pool is about 40 feet from my weather station and have never had a problem getting signal.

1.0 out of 5 stars Didn't like weather station
This unit never talked well with our weather station so we bought a new station recommended by the manufacturer and it still would not communicate. This unit also leaked which did not happen with the other floating sensors that I purchased. I have tried one of each brand now with disappointing results, frosted view window, leaking, short duration (3 months) of use, maybe...

Currently using a WMR200A Oregon Scientific weather station and wanted to install the THWR800A Wireless Floating Temperature Sensor to a home spa. The temperature sensor installed and was recognized by the WMR200A in less than 3 minutes. The unit has been working without any issues for the past two months.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very convenient, but take steps to prevent leaks, September 22, 2010

Update 4/8/11: I found an improved wireless pool sensor at the local Home improvement store called Acu-Rite model 00617. The design seems superior to this leaky one. The Acu-Rite has 5 screws that hold the top seal, and the base unit shows a temp graph for the last few hours and days, plus it shows the wireless signal strength. And it costs half the price of this one! The Acu-Rate is also made in China so let's hope it lasts longer than this one did.

I'm on the 3rd pool sensor. The first two were from Brookstone and upon close inspection, it is the identical product to this one from Oregon Scientific, except for the color of the rubber ring. The first one developed a leak after about 3 months and rusted the internal circuits. I took steps to protect the second unit by putting silicone sealant around the seam next to the rubber ring. This lasted longer, almost a year, but it still developed a leak right onto the circuit board and was also destroyed! So I finally discovered that the leak also appears to be coming from the seam at the top where the Antenna's grey rubber cover meets the plastic enclosure (see my customer photo). I think that also covering the entire top part with clear aquarium silicone sealant may do the trick and make it last a lot longer before sprouting a leak. I highly recommend that anyone buying one of these do the same. Other reviewers are also having the same leak problems if you check out the other reviews on this product. The fact that I keep buying these despite this design/manufacturing defect shows just how useful these things are! It's a very nice design otherwise. Everyone loves to see the pool temp from inside the house and I'd get in trouble if I didn't replace it.

Have owned Oregone Scientific air temp sensor station for over 8 years with ecellent performance an no problems. The floating sensor is a great addition. Rugged construction and large display make it a good sensor even if not used with a remote station.

1.0 out of 5 stars Item likely good; seller failed, May 12, 2011

The only reason I'm giving this item a one star is due to the seller ANTOnline. This item came in a cheap bubble wrap bag and did not work immediately upon opening. After discovering this I found that ANTO's return policy is that the purchaser ALWAYS pays return shipping, no matter the circumstance. Furthermore, the return instructions stated that the returned item must be packaged in complete original condition suitable for re-sale. (Really?!? It's defective!). So I did this anyway. Then the instructions state that the returned item must be sent 1. in a box, 2. with plenty of packing material, 3. insurance recommended, and 4. UPS recommended. Really?!? They just sent it to me in a cheap bubble wrap bag by USPS without insurance. So, in short, ANTOnline can send you a brand new item by the cheapest worst means possible but you have to send the defective unit back, paying for it yourself, by the most expensive means. Ok, that's just messed up.

I've gone through two of these thermometers on my hot tub. They only last one year. The first one I left in all the time (winter only on my indoor hot tub). After it failed, the second one I only put in the water on weekends during the winter, that didn't help much, it stopped working after 1 year also. It's a nice thermometer when it works.

This product started out very nice. Large digits and transmits to my base station and I'm able to publish my pool temp to the web.
Then after 2 months the LCD display stopped being visible; but the unit continued to transmit to my base station. Then I had my first connection difficulty to the base station. I opened the unit and drained the water and cleaned the internal cavities. I sealed the unit with a waterproof pool lubricant. One month later; the unit stops transmitting again and I cannot seem to repair it. After purchasing the base station and software; I feel somewhat stuck. The expense of replacing this THWR800A even once seems like too much. My advice is look for an alternative product before purchasing this line of sensor equipment.
