5.0 out of 5 stars If you need UV info, this is great!
UV sensor works great and is consistent with NOAA readings nearby. Easy set-up except for needing to restart the base station once. Now I know how much sunscreen to put on...

2.0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware
This works fine (for now), but it is a rather expensive disposable UVI weather sensor. My first UVN800 lasted a little over one year before it just died. I'm hoping this one will maybe get me 2 years! ...., just know what you're in for when you buy this.

An add-on for the WMR200. Mine worked well for a year before failing without warning. The little red light flashes to say its transmitting but the base station just keeps reading zero UV. On the forums eg [...] I find this is not unusual, and like mine the failure is out of the guarantee period. I will have to buy another but it has to be considered an expensive "disposable".

2.0 out of 5 stars Broke after 2 years, July 10, 2011
This review is from: Oregon Scientific UVN800 Remote UV Sensor (Kitchen)
Hi

My UVN800 broke after 2 years. When I reset using the button it blinks once. No transmitting so I'm looking for a replacement. I guess the warranty has ended or it the 3 years on such a device?

BR, Anders

3.0 out of 5 stars UV/sunlight monitor., May 1, 2011
This review is from: Oregon Scientific UVN800 Remote UV Sensor (Kitchen)
I bought this for my WMR100A works well most of the time. Sometimes she is a pill to get working. I use this in the garden so I keep safe. But also this doubles as a sunlight recorder. How intence and how many hours we get in the garden. When hooked up to a computer the UV readings record every update, But every now and then expect to see the signal drop this puts gaps into the data. I han't owned it for a year yet, according to other reviews saying it doesn't last over a year Well I'l cross my fingers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings about this device., March 21, 2010

The Oregon Scientific UVN800 ultraviolet index sensor was amongst the first things I bought after having purchased their Oregon Scientific WMR100 Professional Wireless Weather Station. Unfortunately, this device leaves a bit to be desired.

First of all, this thing is quite expensive for what it does... it's a glorified light sensor. It simply detects the amount of UV light from the sun and sends the result as an integer estimate to the main console. It's also a bit odd why Oregon Scientific didn't just include this device with the weather station in the first place, instead of leaving you with missing functionality right out of the box. That being said, after setting up my weather station I soon found it to be a necessary purchase in order to complete the package. After the pain of spending more cash was aside, it was relatively easy to install the batteries and mount the UV sensor to a post using the included bracket (a ground stake is also included for placing in your yard). About every 73 seconds, according to the manual, the UV sensor takes a reading and sends it to the console.

Now for the bad. Like I have found most of Oregon Scientific's weather instruments to be, this UV sensor is not incredibly durable. After having the device for not quite one year, surviving just one mild Washington State summer and winter, the sensor failed. It simply quit sending a reading to the main unit. After a long chat with customer service, we declared it to be dead, and Oregon Scientific sent me a new one (as of three months it is still working). The moral: make sure you keep a keen eye on your weather station's sensors, this one included, and if one seems to be acting up, act immediately while they are still under warranty.

One thing I must add, slightly unrelated to the UV sensor, is that Oregon Scientific's manuals are a bit sparse and contradictory. For example, the manual for this device tells you to mount the sensor with a direct view of the sky (makes sense), but further down the boilerplate text explains how you should never allow the sensor to get wet or experience extreme temperatures. A little proof reading would make things a little less confusing. Nonetheless, this sensor is easy to get set up without a manual.

Even with lukewarm ratings, I do recommend purchasing this sensor to complete your weather station, though don't let it go unnoticed if something just doesn't seem right a year or so down the road.

This product works great, too bad it has to be used with the Oregon Scientific WMR200a weather station, which has a multitude of problems, all of which Oregon Scientific has know about for several years and has made effort to correct.

I purchased the UVN800 UV radiation sensor, to use it with my WMR-100 weather station. I found it simple to install, the wireless connection was stabilished at the first attempt (by pressing the SEARCH button below the WMR-100)and by now the sensor works fine (ten days after installation). It seems to be a reliable product.
