How this plays out is that the alarm goes off warning me about a thunderstorm or flash flood warning in an ajacent county.

We had the older version of this little radio for years The problem with the older version is that it won't turn off. We now keep the older one in the house and keep this one in our car for our travels. We just put the batteries in, made sure the directions were the same (from the instruction sheet) to set time date etc. And it is ready to go You can set it up, which is a bit more difficult, for specific oounties but we just turn it on and it will automatically go to your closest weather area. We really like this radio.

I think this weather alert radio is a must have product for boaters. Unlike VHF radios this one has a setting to alert automatically in case of severe weather in your area. This helps you to get to safety.

The previous model would lose customized settings when the batteries died, but this one does not.

The radio appears to work as designed, and has already alerted us to bad weather this season. However, it is extremely annoying that you can't turn down the volume of an alert in progress. A previous Oregon Scientific weather radio allowed a person to do this. I can understand the default volume being high when an alert starts, but you should be able to turn it down! The only workaround is to turn the alert off, which defeats the whole purpose of having a weather radio.

Well, I agree with the reviewer that wanted to drop kick this item - or at least the instruction book. It was written like James Joyce took up technical writing. Use the quick start instruction sheet and ignore the longer booklet. However, the radio, once set up worked really well. I kept it on NOAA standby and it came alive when an alert came down. Useful and helped me know when to head to the basement with my 6 year old and dogs as the storm got close.

I just purchased this radio to take with me when camping in the event of severe weather. I read a lot of reviews on a variety of radios sold by Amazon before deciding on this one. I only received it this week, so I can't vouch yet for its longevity. But it was much easier to set up than some of the reviews indicate. Because of the detailed explanation of the SAME codes given in the user manual it was a bit confusing to program at first. You really don't need to know all of that. Just ignore all the explanations, follow the instructions on how to put the radio in the programming mode and simply enter the six-digit number found for your area on the NOAA web site. I had it on this morning waiting for the NOAA test to make sure I had it programmed correctly. I had the volume turned down to "3" and it was still plenty loud when the test alarm went off. All in all, this seems to be a great radio for the price. One other small complaint - I wish that the a/c adapter plugged into the cradle rather than directly into the radio. I'm concerned how well the connection will hold up over time as I unplug it and plug it back in when I take it camping and return home.

What a great little radio. You will never miss a severe weather alert again. It can be set in its holder on a dresser or chest by your bed, kitchen counter or elsewhere, as well as unplugged and hand carried using batteries. It is very user friendly (we have 3)and very reliable. I highly recommend this product.Oregon Scientific Portable Emergency Weather Radio

I previously owned the wr602 and it worked very well. When it finally wore out, I tried to get another one. I found it had been replaced with the wr601, so I bought it. It seemed to work ok in the beginning. After a couple months, it stopped recognizing the codes I had programmed and started broadcasting unwanted alerts. I called Oregon Scientific and told them the problem. First they told me to reset the radio. When I contacted them to ask where the reset button was, they told me there was no reset button. We verified I had it set up correctly, and I said I would give it a little more time. Well, the time passed and I was still getting out of area alerts, so I called Oregon Scientific to try to get a refund (I've only had the radio less than 5 months), and was told I could not get a refund but they would replace the radio. I don't want the radio as I have read many other reviews stating the same problem. So I will scratch Oregon Scientific off my list of places to spend my money.
