Editorial Reviews

Carmina Burana is a scenic cantata composed by Carl Orff in 1935 and 1936. It is based on 24 of the poems found in the medieval collection Carmina Burana. This recording of Carmina Burana dates from the zenith of Andre Previn's golden era at the helm of the London Symphony Orchestra and has been re-mastered from the original stereo EMI Master Tapes. Previn is accompanied on this important work by the St. Clement Danes Grammar School Boys Choir and the London Symphony Orchestra Chorus. Produced and engineered by the legendary EMI team of Christopher Bishop and Christopher Parker. This extended resolution CD (XRCD24) from JVC brings the listener higher fidelity and improved audio quality by enhancing the process of mastering and manufacturing compact discs. This XRCD24 is compatible with all CD players.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really (possibly) spectacular November 21, 2012
Verified Purchase
I read about this in a review by John Sunier at Audiophile Audition. He's right, this is a spectacular reincarnation of a performance I had certainly under appreciated--perhaps because I never REALLY heard what was going on inside. The Orff score is full of exciting but subtle reinforcements of the choir and orchestra by percussion. I'd never so clearly heard this, or recognized Previn's insights in these regards, until this version. It is possible that there is some glare at high levels, but I haven't listened to this on enough different systems to be sure. Nonetheless, in my opinion well worth the cost. A fascinating release.

NOTE: On further listening I think that in order to sharpen up the mid-range transient response the engineers somehow 'congested' the highs. What I initially described as glare now sounds to me almost like clipping, at any playback level. I sent the CD to a very critical friend without comment. He complained about the highs--and in fact the whole recording. In sum, now I feel less certain about recommending this recording to you. It may be my systems, etc., since a respected reviewer liked the recording. Something I can't explain.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent performance in slightly upgraded sonics February 25, 2013
If you already own one of the EMI Previn discs and like it well enough to think it warrants an upgrade in sonics, the Hi-Q release may be just the thing you're looking for. Moreover, if you don't already own the recording in any form, you might consider Hi-Q if you have a really super playback system and very deep pockets because the Hi-Q doesn't come cheap.
