4.0 out of 5 stars Bach's Favorite Organist September 17, 2013
Verified Purchase
Buxtehude was a famous composer and organist in the late seventeenth century; J. S. Bach walked about 250 miles to see him about 1705 and stayed so long that he lost his job. Buxtehude's organ music obviously greatly influenced Bach's music for that instrument, though there are obvious differences, as well. Buxtehude's organ works are all multi-sectional, each section usually lasting about 3-5 minutes. The preludes tend to be fantasies, followed by short fugues, which may also be then followed by other sections of slightly different techniques, so that each work contains some variety. Most of these works are about 6-8 minutes in length, though there are some longer ones included in this very well filled set of two cds. I particularly liked the longer works included on the second disc, and one or two of them approach the level of greatness seen only in Bach's organ music. There are also chorale fantasias on some of the themes which Bach used later in his chorale settings, as well as chaconnes and a passacaglia, which are all interesting.

Both playing and sound are of high quality; the BBC MUSIC MAGAZINE gave this four stars for performance and four for sound. In their system of stars, four is EXCELLENT. If you're interested in an inexpensive, well recorded introduction to the music of this notable composer, start here. The only thing missing is program notes, but the net provides several good articles about the man and his music, and if you want more, go to the library.

5.0 out of 5 stars If organ music's your thing, stop here. October 7, 2013

Technically and interpretatively close to perfect as always with M-C Alain. Although to say Buxtehude's organ music is generally 5* would mean Bach's would be 6*. . . well, why not? The acoustics, though not earth-shattering, are fine.
