4.0 out of 5 stars Really good, with some flaws December 17, 2011
Format:Hardcover
I have the 2nd edition of this book. First of all, this book is extremely well written and has a lot of visual help. It will explain ochem conceptually in a superb manner, HOWEVER. The practice problems are lacking. She does supply her notes in her solution manual, which is very helpful, but the problems are too easy. Condensed structures are used in problems even up to chapter 8, when really, it should all be line structures to be on par with problems on an actual test. No professor will baby you with condensed structures for mechanisms on a test. The book problems are catered more to give you the fundamentals, not actual challenges to prep you up for the test. I would highly recommend this book to UNDERSTAND ochem, and use Leroy Wades's to DO ochem. Leroy's unfortunately is not as well written, but the problems are very good. If these two writers could join forces, they would make the ultimate ochem book.

As a student I find this text one of the best I have ever used. The easy to follow bulleted information format theme throughout the book is extremely helpful both in learning the material and studying for a test. Its beautiful cover, clean molecular graphics, and relevant aside images create a pleasant aesthetic that transfers to the material and enhances the learning process. Visualization is so important for organic chemistry and beautifully presented here. Chapter and page layouts make sense and are easy to follow as new subjects are presented. If you are a professor I would recommend you start using this text book to teach your O-Chem course, your students will benefit from it.

I needed to know Organic Chemistry by Janice Gorzynski Smith was THE book that was required for my class. Having the full cover image, author information, and ISBN displayed prominently saved me time, energy, and heartache.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well-structured but many explanations lacking July 23, 2011
By poofier
Format:Hardcover
Let me start by saying that in most regards this organic chemistry text is head and shoulders above most of the hard science textbooks that I've encountered as a student. It is full of engaging colors and pictures, has a logical organization and flow, and generally avoids the "wall of text" pitfall that spelled the demise of every physics book I own. Prioritization of information is effectively accomplished through bolding and colored blockquotes, and though the use of these tools isn't 100% consistent throughout the text it's still very helpful when you're reviewing a chapter and don't want to read through every word.

Thanks to the reasons I described above, this textbook does an excellent job at communicating the "what's" and "how's" of organic chemistry, but what it frequently fails to capture are the "why's." It seems to cater toward students just memorizing each reaction mechanism rather than building a fluid understanding of what's going on. So unless you have a great professor who can fill in this gap, I would highly recommend getting Organic Chemistry I as a Second Language to supplement this text. The content coverage isn't identical but it's close, and it really hammers home the fundamentals of organic chemistry in a way that this textbook just doesn't.

3.0 out of 5 stars Barely enough information July 29, 2011
By A.P.
Format:Hardcover
Pros:
(*) Directions on "how to" explain chirality, name a molecule, etc. are fairly clear
(*) The actual text sticks to each chapter's topic.
(*) End of chapter summaries are quite helpful for remembering and reviewing reactions.

Cons:
(*) No answers in the book (not even a handful for each chapter...must purchase accompanying answer manual for ANY homework explanation)
(*) The molecules just black and white, so if you don't already know "what" is moving "where" you might be a little lost with this book.
(*) It would have been nice to see larger sections in each chapter dedicated to the application of organic chemistry "in real life". I know there were a few, small sections, but those interesting tidbits kept it interesting and made it easy to relate to!

Overall: I've had a different textbook which I preferred more for organic chemistry, and this one didn't quite make the grade. It seemed to include barely enough information to cover a topic and then quickly move on. More depth would have made sense in some areas of the book which seemed skimmed over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book August 12, 2013
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I took Organic Chemistry once before with a different book and it was full of useless information and facts. This book gets straight to the point in an easy and concise way. GET THE ANSWER BOOK! It provides tons of small problem solving things that you don't notice in the book. I have learned so much more from this book then before. Everyone says O-chem is the devil, but really, I've enjoyed learning the subject (again).

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book January 24, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A wonderful book, well done. I read it in electronic form. Since I am not a chemist and interested in this science, then it is difficult with this, or compare. But I am sure of one thing: this is the most brilliant book on organic chemistry, these books I have not seen. A large number of high-quality, colorful comments. A very large number of tasks. Complete summary of the terms and the main results at the end of each chapter.

2.0 out of 5 stars Confusing, poorly worded, missing some key stuff
This is a poor textbook overall. The book is poorly written and lacks some key reactions, esp in the 2nd half. Buy chem as a 2nd language instead, much better! Read more
