5.0 out of 5 stars Good textbook
John McMurry of Cornell University did again a very good job as he brought the good level of knowledge of organic chemistry with right links to the real world in traditionally (for McMurry's books) very high level textbook which is well readable, has good part of problem solving guide and which is in my eyes a book which was needed just today. I can suggest the textbook...

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor teaching aid
This book seems to have been written and never used in a classroom prior to going to press. Had it been used in a actual classroom it would have become obvious that the book lacked the teaching of fundamental principles that would have precluded the needless memorization of much of the information. In the class that I am taking at the College of San Mateo i.e. a Junior...

5.0 out of 5 stars Good textbook, August 8, 2007
This review is from: Organic Chemistry (Hardcover)
John McMurry of Cornell University did again a very good job as he brought the good level of knowledge of organic chemistry with right links to the real world in traditionally (for McMurry's books) very high level textbook which is well readable, has good part of problem solving guide and which is in my eyes a book which was needed just today. I can suggest the textbook to every student who wants to get basic knowledge of organic chemistry in a simple and easy way.
Very good 3D models, mostly with electronic or charge densities (it looks as if from Wavefunction kitchen) are good tool for understanding the spatial construction of molecules, i.e. their conformation and configuration. Book has very good connotations to life (illicit drugs) and environmental problems (energy and fuel). Also the summaries after each chapter followed by exercises as well as the reviewing chapters are excellent features of good teaching. Very good for teaching is also the Glossary, small encyclopedia od organic chemistry expressions.

5.0 out of 5 stars good, but go for the 6th edition, January 25, 2011

This is a great text, actually one of the best. The only thing is that if you compared the newest to the previous 6th edition, nothing new. Do yourself a favor and grab a copy of the sixth for a fraction of the price since most if not all of the chapters are identical along with the pictures and molecular examples. Just a word of advice from one broke undergrad to others.

4.0 out of 5 stars Could Use More Example, September 23, 2007

This review is from: Organic Chemistry (Hardcover)
Organic Chemistry is all about working problems out. The authors of the book should probably consider putting more problems into the book, because the cornucopia of practice needed and the minuscule amount provided do not go very well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect guide for Organic Chemistry, January 21, 2010
This review is from: Organic Chemistry (Hardcover)
Organic Chemistry is a very tough subject, so one needs a guide that would simplify the subject so that readers can understand it easily. This books is just that perfect guide that helps you learn organic chemistry easily than most other textbooks. John Mcmurry presents and explains all the concepts, reactions, and mechanisms very clearly. Mcmurry's writing style made it easy to read and comprehend all the chapters. What I REALLY liked about this book is that it is not oversaturated with unnecessary information. It is very readable and information is precisely presented; only the information that one needs to know for their exams and at the same time having a good understanding of organic chemistry. Even for those people who don't like to read textbooks (mainly because of their bad reputation of being oversaturated with information) would find this easy to read and comprehend. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars What Can I Say...It's a Chemistry Book!, March 15, 2009

Sometimes the book isn't so clear. If you took Inorganic Chemistry I or II recently this book would be easier to understand..if not, your better off getting the book with the student access card to the study tool. The study tools are awesome! I swear they have helped me earn better grades than if I didn't have them! It's a must unless you can visualize in 3D. Either way, the extra $$ for them is worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A graet organic chemistry book, October 3, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is written in a very rational and logical way. Any student who wants to become a scientist should study science as a scientist. For such a student, this organic chemistry book is a great tool and resource, because it provides chemical information, encouraging the student to ask questions like what, why and how during the learning process. It smoothly creates connections between new information and the knowledge that the student already possesses. So it is not so hard to read through the book even though organic chemistry is comparatively a hard subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh the WOrLD of Organic CHemistry, February 15, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
As most may know OChem is a difficult course. If you are lucky enough to have a great professor you will not need to spend very much time with the book. Otherwise, this book makes a great companion. Very precise, organized (tables and structures), and understandable. Came in great condition.

This book seems to have been written and never used in a classroom prior to going to press. Had it been used in a actual classroom it would have become obvious that the book lacked the teaching of fundamental principles that would have precluded the needless memorization of much of the information. In the class that I am taking at the College of San Mateo i.e. a Junior College I don't believe anyone is still reading this text at this time which is near the end of the semester. If you are in Organic Chemistry and need a study aid I would recommend without reservation "Organic Chemistry I as a Second Language Translating the Basic Concepts" by David R. Klein. I am heading into the final with an A for those that are curious.
