Many cities are eliminating plastic shopping (checkout) bags, but they have failed to address the fact that on most trips to the market we also use 6 to 8 plastic produce bags. Our Reusable Mesh Produce Bags eliminate the need for plastic bags. They are made of UNBLEACHED ORGANIC COTTON material. Although higher in cost, unbleached organic cotton provides huge benefits to the environment and our health, because it avoids the highly toxic pesticides, fertilizers and processing chemicals used in regular cotton crops. Reusable Mesh Bags are great for fruits and vegetables. The mesh fabric is highly stretchable and allows for easy identification of contents. They can be used for both shopping and storage, as the cotton material allows for excellent air circulation. Easy to care for, just wash in cold water and line dry. Expect about 10-20% shrinkage on the first wash. The mesh material will stretch back out to near the prewashed size when filled with produce. These bags are perfect for buying produce. They don't work as well to store produce in the fridge, the mesh allows too much air and veggies tend to wilt much faster. But I bought them as grocery bags, not as storage bags, so they're perfect for what I need them for! The tare weight is sewn into the bag, so the cashier can deduct it easily, but each bag only weighs 0.08 lbs so it only costs a few extra cents if you forget.

As with the organic cotton reusable produce bags I also purchased (they were solid bags, not mesh), I absolutely love these mesh produce bags! I have used reusable canvas grocery bags for years (even before reusable bags became popular), and always hated using the grocery store plastic bags for my produce. When I saw these bags I was so excited. The bags have their tare weight on them, so the clerk can deduct the bag weight from the total weight of the produce (although, honestly, the bags weigh so little, they really don't make that much difference in the total weight and cost of what you're purchasing). I like the fact, too, that they are organic - no chemicals were used to bleach the cotton, nor were any pesticides used in the cotton crop. If you are really into helping the environment, which I would imagine you are since you're looking at these bags, make sure to read what they are made of and if chemicals or pesticides were used to make them. It makes a difference! I highly recommend these bags!

I enjoy having these bags, and no longer needing to use plastic bags for produce. They're strong and hold up well. It may take the cashier a few extra seconds to try to look through the mesh, or to pull an item out to find its code, and to subtract the bag weight if they choose to, but that's a small price to pay for what you're saving.
My only complaint is with how Amazon packaged these. I was surprised when I placed my order that shipping and handling was over $5 for these. I found out why when they arrived. The bags were placed in a manila envelope by their manufacturer (that's all that was really needed). This envelope was then placed in a cardboard box large enough to hold 2 or 3 pairs of shoes, and then filled with air bags. It's disappointing that Amazon would use such excessive packaging for any item, but especially for an item being purchased for the purpose of reducing waste. I left packaging feedback for the item with Amazon. Hopefully they do better with this in the future.
