5.0 out of 5 stars Yowzas!, February 9, 2006
This review is from: Organic Hallucinosis (Audio CD)
There are probably two things you'll notice right away about "Organic Hallucinosis." Firstly, you'll notice that the music often echoes Behemoth. Next, it should be apparent that the vocals are quite a bit higher pitched here, than on older Decapitated albums, when Sauron was the singer. Covan doesn't growl or bellow nearly as much as most other death metal bands; his vocals are actually quite intelligible, and I'd say the Meshuggah and Fear Factory comparisons aren't far off. This vocal style may take some death metal diehards a while to get used to, but it also helps this band to stand out from other bands, like the aforementioned Behemoth.

As is the case with Decapitated's earlier albums, "Organic Hallucinosis" is a friggin' monster! The six string guitar attacks form a rock hard, impenetrable rhythm section for Covan to bark over. But, as with most great death metal, there is somewhat of a method to this album's mayhem. The drumming is precise, and the riffs are very technical and sometimes even catchy.

"A Poem About an Old Man" is a scorching album opener which has explosive riffs and a pounding double bass. Later on, "Day 69" has a thunderous, jackhammer beat and is capped off by a searing guitar solo. "Post (?) Organic" begins as a lightning fast, almost buzzsaw flurry of guitars, but a tempo change kicks in and the beat becomes rhythmic and choppy, with punching power chords that sound like shotgun fire. "Visual Delusion" has heavy, churning guitars and an insanely fast and brutal blast beat, and, finally, "Invisible Control" is an almost deafening album closer.

"Organic Hallucinosis" is somewhat short (only 32 minutes long), but what's here is gold! If you like bands like Behemoth, Cryptopsy, and Nile, you should definitely pick this up. It's definitely the best extreme metal album of 2006 so far, and probably one of the best to be released all year long.

4.0 out of 5 stars So far the most Brutal of 2006., April 4, 2006

DECAPITATED - Organic Hallucinosis
-
So this is the latest album from these youthful tech metal prodigies I keep hearing so much about.
For being such a short album, [7 songs - just over 30 minutes] I must admit, it is quite satisfying. Insanely technical death metal that is not only `Brutal' but actually has groove! Sure the `groove' could crush a Panzer Tank but that doesn't mean it isn't there...

Solid Musicianship... Insane drumming, (listen to 2:15 of track #2.) Great guitar work, love the tone and the solos are great, and the bass, from what I can hear is great...
Now, I see a lot of people complaining about the vocalist change. Besides this album, the last time I had heard Decapitated was awhile back and I cannot recall what their old vocalist sounded like. I do however like the Vocals on this album... They may not be that varied, but they are mostly legible and are definitely fitting to the music. Actually... it almost reminds me of `Barney' from Napalm Death.

Top tier Tech, Death Metal... As mentioned by others this will likely appeal to Fans of Cryptopsy, Nile, Behemoth and even Morbid Angel.

Favorite Songs: Day 69, Invisible Control and Flash - B(L)ACK.

5.0 out of 5 stars Their best so far?, June 20, 2006

It could well be. Decapitated have become one of my favourite death metal bands in recent times and with good reason. Their musicianship rivals, if not surpasses, most and even some of the best death metal bands without their music become tasteless and overly technical, even though they're still very young. Their sound is solid and has a unique character. And especially on this latest release of theirs, their song writing is damn near unparalleled.

The more I listen to death metal, the more I find that a lot of bands are simply too generic. Too many bands are happy to just through out a catchy mid paced riff and follow it up with blast beats. Somehow, when Decaptitated do this they make it sound original and they do it so well that you couldn't care either way. There really is something special about this band in a sub-genre so full of immitators and mediocrity.

As for Organic Hallucinosis itself, it's without doubt their most mature album to date. While The Negation harked back to the thrashier side of death metal, this album goes the other way straying from typical death metal yet still keeping it close at hand. Tempo changes abound, this album uses blast beats very effectively rather than simply making them a constant focal point. Vitek's drumming is better than ever, in part because of this. Quite aside from the fact that he's a technical monster, the way the band slow down to mid pace from time to time allows him to really work with the music, showing his musical ear and adding subtle yet highly effective nuances to his drumming. Vogg doesn't seem to be doing anything he hasn't been doing on previous albums but when you're as good a guitarist as he is simply keeping up to the standards you've set yourself before is good enough and he does that with ease.

One of the major reasons for the somewhat different feel on this album compared with previous Decapitated albums is the change in vocalists. New vocalist Covan is different to the band's previous vocalist Sauron. His vocals are in more of a mid range compared to Sauron's deep growls. It's part of what makes Organic Hallucinosis sound a little more refined, although it sounds a little less brutal as a result (on a little though, mind). His vocals definitely suit the new direction that Decapitated seem to be heading in here though I do miss the sheer crunch of Sauron's growls (he is one of my favourite death metal vocalists on previous albums, but that's another story).

Anyway, as you can tell I love this album. It may be a little short (not much over half an hour in length) but if you like or are interested in getting into technical death metal, or extreme metal of any kind, this comes highly recommended.
