Les Moulins Mahjoub Organic Harissa Spread is made from sundried ground peppers, garlic, cardamon, salt, coriander, and extra virgin olive oil. This famous Tunisian condiment adds a smoky heat and spice to enhance almost any dish. The use of sun-dried peppers gives this Harissa a delightfully full, chewy texture and meaty depth. Using peppers of medium strength, designed to enhance the full range of flavor of the dried chili, this condiment is truly the "terroir of Tunisia." As with all of the Mahjoub products, this is produced using traditional farming methods with no additives or artificial processes.

I love the variations between and among brands of this wonderful paste, and this is one that pleases my palate.

What drew me to this is the flavor. It is a little different from the other brands of harissa I frequently use and each has its own flavor personality. This one has a distinct cardamom flavor that my other favorite brands lack. That balances the spiciness in an interesting way because my palate associates cardamom with sweets, while the heat and bite from the peppers counterbalance that effect.

Other aspects that I love about this harissa is the way the garlic is a little more dominate than in other brands, and the olive oil, which is exceptionally high quality.

Nutritionally, this particular brand of harissa comes in at a lower caloric content than others, and is has zero sodium, which is a major contrast with another of my favorite brands - Mediterranean Harissa (8.8 ounce) - that comes on at 298mg per serving. This one not only has zero sodium and cholesterol, but only 51 calories per 11 gram serving. Fat and carbs come in at 4 grams each. If you compare these values to other brands you will see that this is one of the most favorable for nutrition.

This is not only an excellent harissa for authentic Tunesian cuisine, but adds authenticity to some Sicilian dishes as well. It's slightly different in flavor from other brands, and middle-of-the-road in spiciness compared to others. I will confess that I often squeeze a little lemon into mine before I use it, but that is a personal preference. I definitely recommend this one if you are looking for harissa that is both flavorful and piquant.

I found out about cooking with Harissa spread/paste from Jamie Oliver's 15 minute meals. After using it in his Moroccan Bream recipe (awesome), I had plenty left over and ended up using it in other ways. One of my family's favorite is to blend a tablespoon into a block of cream cheese. It is so good on crackers and as a sandwich wrap spread. The other use was to mix some in to sour cream and use as a dip for veggies and chips. This is a new pantry staple for me!

This is absolutely the worst harissa... It is so greasy, bland and overpriced. Never buying this again. THIS HARISSA IS NOT RECOMMENDED!
