Cocker Revisits Classic Songs, Improves Them,
By
This review is from: Organic (Audio CD)
Most of the songs on "Organic" have been recorded previously by Cocker, but in almost every case he improves upon the original. He even adds a new verse to "You Are So Beautiful". The arrangements are stripped down and emphasize acoustic intruments, so the overall effect is like an "unplugged" album, although instead of a rough "live" sound this is a very well-produced, polished album. There are also a few selections that, as far as I know, have not previously been recorded by Cocker, such as "High Lonesome Blue" or Van Morrison's "Into The Mystic". The highlight is "Can't Find My Way Home", but the fact is, almost every song here would be a highlight on most of his other albums. This is my favorite Joe Cocker album, and if you already have many of these songs in your collection from other albums, please don't let that deter you, you'll really like what he does with those old favorites here.

Excellent performance by Cocker backed by superb sessionmen,

This CD offers a terrific selection of covers for Cocker, some old and others new. He's backed-up by a wonderful assemblage of session men, who do an impeccable and very tasteful job of coloring and adding texture to the songs. Cocker's vocals and phrasing are excellent, and represent perhaps one of his finest efforts. There's a couple of real gems here, notably "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" (wonderful reggae) "High Lonesome Blues" (classic road-house blues) and "Can't Find My Way Home" (best version ever and perfect CD closing song). The arrangement of songs is well done, and the Don Was production shines through, providing an excellent presentation of the songs and the artists. A real collector.

Cocker Unplugged,
By Thomas Buckingham (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Organic (Audio CD)
Think of this album as "Joe Cocker Unplugged." It contains new versions of old songs, this time issued with a stripped down background that puts the emphasis on Cocker's expressive voice. This album quickly became my favorite of his. I recommend it highly.
