My daughter has a lot of allergies and started having severe breathing issues when we bought a traditional mattress for her new big-girl bed. It seems the polyurethane foam is a pretty common trigger for people with allergies and chemical sensitivities. That said, we ended up buying a very expensive, all natural mattress and wanted it to last a very long time. This was the perfect solution. It is completely safe, non-toxic, passes GreenGuard standards, and doesn't off-gas. You would never know there's a waterproof membrane between the two layers of organic cotton, but it is truly waterproof and has protected the new mattress from a couple of very wet accidents already.

Update, June 2012: I was interested in additional details about what the waterproof inner film was made of after I first posted this review. I emailed Naturepedic, and they replied to my inquiry with a very kind, but disappointing email that it was proprietary information and that they couldn't give a lot more info, other than emphasizing many of the things that were NOT in it. I was not entirely happy with the response, but overall, I was still happy with the safety and efficacy of the mattress pad. However, shortly after our email exchange, Naturepedic emailed me again to let me know they recently updated their website to reflect more detailed info. I was really impressed with this kind of follow-up and awesome response to a concerned customer. Kudos to them for recognizing how important this information is and for quickly following up not just with me but for officially changing the info on their public site. Here's the more detailed language from their website that describes the DrySleep liner:

Drysleep uses a specially formulated polyurethane waterproof barrier that is proven to not leach harmful chemicals. It is made from the same grade material as is required for food contact applications. It also meets the highest standards for medical device biocompatibility (USP Class VI). It does not contain any fire retardants or antimicrobial treatments and is free of vinyl/PVC, phthalates and latex. It also easily passes the GREENGUARD Children & Schools and Select certification standards for chemical emissions and is approved under the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).

All in all, we're extremely happy with this purchase and it works exactly as it states. The fact that it comes from NaturePedic, one of the only mattress makers to get Healthy Child Healthy World's endorsement, helps us all sleep that much better at night!

Sheesh- I know I sound like an advertisement there, but after seeing my child suffer because of a mattress I told her she'd be safe on, my heart is so grateful that there are companies that make products that are truly safe and healthy for children and the rest of us.

This is a nice mattress pad and the reason why I made the purchase was due to the fact that it is made from 100% cotton. We have been using the Naturepedic pad for about 16 months now and have not had ANY leakage problems through to the mattress. And the best part about this mattress pad its breathability and capacity to remove wetness from the surface (both sheet and pad), resulting in a quick-drying action. Whenever I would check wet spots, somehow they seemed to be LESS wet than when using tradition polyester/urethane mattress pads. . .resulting in DRIER and LESS SMELLY sheets! I know this seems like too much information, but I wanted to make note of it because I found it to be a pleasant surprise.

When we purchased this pad, our son was 4 years old and a HEAVY night wetter. Despite alternating between two pads (the Naturepedic and a polyester-type pad), we still managed to have to wash the Naturepedic about 2 times a week (on average). It wasn't until after about the first 6 months of usage that I began to notice shrinkage in the pad. Despite this, the pad still fit the bed quite nicely.

At about 9 or so months after using this pad, my required washing routine changed. I no longer have to wash the pad as often as I did in the beginning. . .but the pad still seems to be slowly decreasing in size. Right now--after a year of use--my pad measures 70 x 38. . .in stead of the specified 75 x 38!

I am not sure what to think about this. On one hand, I am disappointed because this pad was quite expensive (compared to synthetic/ cotton-blend pads) and now I have to struggle to get it on to my son's twin-size mattress. . .due to the fact that the straps pull very tightly at each corner. This has caused me to now reach for alternative pads just because I do not enjoy dealing with the hassle of lifting and tugging at the mattress and pad. On the other hand, I understand the natural properties of 100% cotton and that shrinkage will occur! The odd thing about this pad is how it has shrunken--the length has the most significant decrease in size (5 inches!) compared to the width. Also, I am VERY concerned about the straps and whether they will be able to hold up much longer to the excessive strain that they are receiving due to tight fit at each corner. Additionally, a couple of the straps have now begun to show stress and come undone (i.e., long strings of unraveled material/thread which holds the elastic together).

So, as far as rating this product goes, I am going to be generous and give it a "4" because I really do like the advantages of using this pad and having 100% cotton. But, I am somewhat frustrated by how this pad has "broken-in." It is definitely softer (and more flexible) than it was in the beginning and the cotton fibers seem to be holding up well. . .but the corner-straps and length have left a lot to be desired. So, for overall durability I would have to rate this pad about 3 or 3.5 stars.

Update (1/31/14):

I contacted customer service over 6 months ago and was very pleased with how they handled my situation. They promptly shipped me another mattress pad. Upon initial inspection, I noticed that the pad "felt" different. It was a lot smoother/silkier and the overall appearance just looked different. I am not sure how to explain it but the color looked a tad bit darker. Anyway, I have washed the pad several times and so far it has held up wonderfully. Unlike the first pad, I immediately noticed the fibers changed appearance after a couple washes. They looked somewhat rough. This HAS NOT been the case with the new pad. It still looks virtually new. Also, I have not noticed any major shrinkage in the length or width. At the moment it still folds down over the foot and head part of the twin mattress.

I am VERY happy that some changes were made and that the pad is working out the had initially hoped when I bought the first one. I do plan to give an update at the "year-mark". Perhaps by then I will be nearly 100% certain that this pad will hold its shape and dimensions indefinitely.

since my daughter spends so many hours in her bed, i wanted a mattress cover that i was confident wouldn't have any off-gassing of chemicals that she would be breathing through the night. this is not a cheap product, but was worth it for the peace of mind. we've only been using it a couple months, but it is high quality and seems very durable. also, it's soft and doesn't make any crinkly noises like some of the vinyl pads.

I searched a long time for a waterproof matress pad that was safe, didn't emit any toxins and didn't make rustling noises. Let me tell you, this is it. It's great, it provides great protection for our new matress, it's soft and safe. I was a little worried that that it doesn't go down the sides of the matress and only secures with the elastic straps, but it fits great and stays in place. I loved the first one so much I purchased a 2nd. It is expensive and it takes a few runs in the dryer to dry fully, but it seems to be of great quality and I expect it will last a long time.

Exactly what I was looking for for my kids. Nice cotton top and bootom layer. No crinkily plastic noise or feel. Does not cause you to become hot or sweaty like most waterproof covers. It does cost more but it is worth it! Amazon has the most reliable shopping. Anything I am looking to buy I check here first.

This waterproof pad is the "berries"! I would like to own a second one; however,it was a bit costly, so I will manage with just one. I am a frugal person and this item was worth every penny. We take it with us on all of our vacations "just in case".

This is the best mattress pad out there if you are looking for truly natural and organic. Yes, it is expensive, but so worth it. I have owned one for about 5 years and after constant use and washing, it is still extremely water resistant. My DD wets pretty regularly and we have never had leakage underneath this pad. Actually, it has held up much, much better than one of the lined pads we also bought. I would buy this again in a heart beat and am considering buying one for the next bed. Also very happy that this is organic cotton, not dyed, and not full of nasty chemicals as some of them are.

when i first received it, i couldn't believe that it was waterproof because you can't see the waterproof fabric which is inside. so i poured water on it to see if it penetrates, and the other side stayed dry! so yeah, it is waterproof. i like that it is without potentially harmful chemicals and is organic. besides, who wants that plasticky backing when you sleep??

I searched high and low for a non-plastic, organic mattress pad for my toddler, and this was the best I could find. I do wish they would create a fitted version. This pad goes just over the edges of a normal sized twin mattress. The pad is made of thick material, so this fits awkwardly even under a thick sheet. Nevertheless, it is comfortable to lay on, and doesn't crunch like plastic. It also hasn't shifted around like I feared it might. My daughter has had one accident on it so far. The accident definitely wet the pad, so it's not exactly waterproof, but it did not leak through to the mattress.

After much debate, we finally settled on an organic mattress for my son's new "big-boy" bed. The more I learned about chemical flame retardants, the less comfortable I felt with the thought of a conventional mattress. I think this is particularly important for little kids, because they spend a lot more time sleeping than adults do! This mattress pad is a perfect complement to the organic mattress.

If you are used to the conventional quilted polyester mattress pads, like I was, this is a bit different. It feels like a single layer of thick fabric. There is no padding or "pillow-like" character to it. I love using it, and here's why:

1. Instead of the elasticized pockets that cover the entire sides of the mattress, this is just a flat rectangle of fabric with elastic straps that hook under each corner of the mattress. This makes it really quick to put on and take off.

2. This is truly waterproof. I have a toddler, so... well, let's just say I have fully tested this property of the mattress pad and it performs as advertised.

3. It doesn't have a crinkly, plastic-y feel. The waterproof layer is sandwiched between fabric. No crinkling. You'd never know this was a waterproof pad by the feel of it.

4. It's easy to care for. Just toss it in the washing machine and dryer.

The only thing I don't like about this pad is the price. However, pretty much any kind of bedding made from organic cotton costs and arm and a leg, so I figured it was worth it. The pad appears to be very good quality and is in like-new condition after 9 months of daily use.
