5.0 out of 5 stars Top Notch!!
I am a beginning gardener who wants to learn to garden without chemicals or pesticides. After using this book for one season, I can't recommend it enough. It is easy to use and full of information that has kept our gardens healthy and beautiful. It has answered all of my questions and kept me excited about trying new things in the next season. Well written, well...

5.0 out of 5 stars top notch, April 28, 2008
This review is from: Organic Gardening (Paperback)
This is the best general-knowledge gardening book in my collection, and definitely the best organic book I've found. The thing I like the most about this volume is that it's *practical.* The author doesn't act like weeds will magically leave you alone or that gardening is a carefree and perfect existance. He offers real world advice that deals with the real, mundane problems of the chemical-free gardener, or any gardener for that matter.

It also contains lots of pictures and is easy to browse for whatever information you're after.

Beautiful illustrations and all the companion planting and natural pest control information I was wanting.

I'm introducing some friends to raised bed, square foot and organic gardening, and it has served me well as a guide in illustrating the ease with which one can garden on an Earth-friendly basis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly useful information, January 13, 2009
This review is from: Organic Gardening (Paperback)
What I really liked about this book was Geoff Hamilton's ability to plunge right into useful info without a lot of preaching to the choir. While someone with a lot of arable land would get the full benefit of this book, apartment and small home dwellers can make the most of it as well. "The Gardening Year" is a great guide to how to schedule your gardening throughout the year according you your US location. I really liked the fact that instructions for DIY tools, containers and fertilizers were abundant. I would definitely encourage anyone thinking of starting an organic garden to start with this book.

Geoff Hamilton's Organic Gardening is an excellent resource for the "weekend gardener" and even more valuable for the expert gardener. I actually grew artichokes this year using Hamilton's advice(I live in the northeast). I am in awe of the myraid of information contained in this book. Buy it! Buy it! Buy it!

Great overall gardening book. It has tips on preparing the soil and goes vegetable by vegetable on what kind of care they need, bugs etc. Also has ideas for green house gardening and other garden layouts and structures.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic book, May 19, 2010

Knew this book from living in the UK. Fantastic to see a US edition, just what I needed as I start gardening again over here. Geoff Hamilton has done so much to influence UK gardening, I'd forgotten how much. Couldn't recommend this book more. He was so very practical, creative and scientific at the same time, and a genius for finding simple, common sense solutions to complex problems.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good reference, May 18, 2010
This review is from: Organic Gardening (Paperback)
First I was disappointed due to the lack of detail in this book, however later I found that I kept opening it up to get some advice before I planted something new in my garden. It is tough to cover everything about gardening in a single book, so if you look at it that way he does a great job. You can get the basics with this book, and if you still need further detail get a specific book for that question or look it up online. The pictures are beautiful, so I can see this book as a winter chaser, getting your mind prepared for the spring.
