This is the kind of bacterial compost STARTER that you want. It has the bacteria that break down the compost material not just things that promote growth. But it MUST be used correctly. It's the bacteria and the fungi that break down the leaves, grass, and so forth (vegetable waste) into compost. You can get instructions in a dozen places but here's a recap. (1) keep the compost pile moist (about like a damp sponge; add water regularly if you don't have enough rain)! Slow composting is almost always due to a pile that's too dry. Keep the pile away from structures. If it composts too fast it can very hot, will steam and can even (in very large piles) catch on fire! (2) Feed the bacterial with sugar-water (4oz/gal) (molasses) YES MOLASSES! Also Fish Emultion water (1oz/gal). You can get horticultural molasses as most nurseries but it costs a fortune (up to $25/gal, wow!). A better place is a Feed Store where they buy the molasses in bulk. Bring a jug and buy some at $2-$3/gal. Watch out for Big Box home centers that put in fungicide (they use it for deer feed). You WANT fungus in compost. The sugar provides the energy that the bacteria need to multiply fast. The Fish Emultion is for the fungus. (3) Poke holes in the pile with a compost turner (or a stick) to let the air get to the pile. You don't want the pile to go anerobic (it will stink). So to sum up you need (1)veg matter (2)moisture (3) sugar (4) AIR!. You should go from brown leaves and grass to black compost in about a month (in the summer).

The activator seems to help with the rottening smell to keep it at bay. Of course the location of the composter helps as well. So far after 1 month I do not see signs of anything resembling dirt however I know the winter freezing temps. will help accelerate the process. I have high hopes of adding this compost to my garden in the spring and then till. Hope my expectations are not unreasonable.
