Editorial Reviews

Review

"In Practice provides real world examples that bring theory to life and make concepts more memorable. Book Marks stimulate interest and have spurred some students to read the books outlined. Briefcase provides some thought provoking tips and captures the essence of the topic described. These all enhance and add another dimension to the text."

"Daft's text is still the best in the field. I am using it every single year and have updated my thinking about design issues with every single edition since it was introduced into the market. What I like about Daft's text is the logic by which students learn to appreciate the complexity of organization-environment relationships and the enormous value of matching structures and strategies. Integrating theoretical approaches with practical examples allows students to gain new knowledge and improve understanding of the reciprocal relationship between strategy and structure."

I would like to say that the content of this book is good. It contains updated information that is applicable to today's economy and world. I have very much been enjoying reading this textbook on my Kindle device, but...
The remainder of this review will not be on the content of the book, but the ordeal I had when I bought the e-book edition. You'll notice that this book is no longer offered for the Kindle device. When I bought this text a couple of weeks ago, it was offered as a Kindle edition for about $30 cheaper. I figured it was worth it because I often like to refer back to my textbooks for new classes. I got through 2 Chapters of this book on my Kindle when I realized that one of the Workbook assignments I had to do was not on the device at all. So I thought, "Maybe it will show up on Kindle for PC." Nope, not there, but a note about information missing due to copyright issues was in its place. Seriously? Probably nobody is reading this book just for the heck of it, most people are reading it for serious schoolwork and all of the information-especially cases for analysis and workbook activities need to be available. Chapter 2 wasn't the only chapter with information missing. I found about 4 other chapters with missing activities and cases, and these were just the chapters that I needed info from, there could have been more with missing info.
Anyway, Amazon was fantastic when I contacted them. And they gave me my money back after I purchased the hardcopy of the book. They said it was something to do with the publisher. And of course, I contacted the publisher just to make sure they knew of the issue. The publishing company was rude and said they had absolutely nothing to do with the problem.

Over the years, I have accepted that American textbooks are like Wonder bread: doughy, thick products with little consistency, but in the end tasty and able to nourish. This book definitely is Wonder Bread gone wrong. After going through it for several days, I am still asking myself how the author could have the courage to call it Organization THEORY. As an example: Daft describes types of organizations: well, there are small ones, and there are large ones, there are for-profits and there are non-profits, and guess what, the difference among for-profit and non-profit is in the goals!!! For-profits have the goal of making profits, while the other may have other goals!!!!! So well, I must confess I am startled about the many stars and excellent reviews this book has got. Recommended for: Bachelor students that think 4P's is the crown of marketing theory. Not recommended for students with a real interest in approaching the subject in a theoretically consistent manner.

I took an Org Theory & Design class while an undergraduate business student. I am now using Daft's book while pursuing my master's. I still have the old material from undergrad and Daft has almost all the same content, but put in simpler language. I think that Daft does very well in the order he introduces the content and makes it very easy to read. This is not usually the case with org design literature in the academic realm. I would recommend Daft over the other org theory and design textbooks I have used.

The book itself is turning out to be quite good. I keep seeing references to current events that are actually CURRENT, which is great and shows the author is still active in today's business world. I'm using this book for an MBA organizational behavior class, and since I signed up for a web class, i though hey why not have everything right there and get a kindle version of the book. I have used Coursesmart for e-texts before and although their formatting sometimes looked like a bad photocopy, it was the actual book layout, with page numbers and headings etc. I'm using Kindle for PC with this one, and the text is very clean but I absolutely hate the lack of page numbers, and even worse, the lack of section headings. 1. I recommend Kindle texts at least implement paragraph numbering in the margins (the location xyz-12.3 is nonsense) and 2. your chapter and section heading should be clearly displayed in the top margin. I'm flipping between bookmarks and I have no idea which chapter I'm looking at, I have to keep jumping to the table of contents to find a specific section, etc. It's a big pain. Coursesmart had a contents outline pane, you could tell exactly where you were instead of searching through 800 bookmarks and highlights.

In preparation for teaching a class in Organizational theory, I bought this text as a background piece for my research. After reading the text,it has become the cornerstone of my teaching. Organizational Theory and Design 10th Edition, is clear, concise, and tremendously interesting. The text is packed with innovations like "The Brief Case" which convey guidelines; "In Practice" features wonderful real life examples that stimulate rich discussion and excellent Case Studies. These short Case Studies provide the instructor a powerful tool that can facilitate student understanding and excitement about the subject. I will use this as our primary text next year.
