Please read this first before you deal with organization...,
By Sergey Pletnev (Luchthaven Schiphol Netherlands) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Organizational Behavior (Paperback)
Robbins presents an excellent review of the existing theories and practices on various aspects of OB. I recommend to read this book anyone who has not had much experience in dealing with organizations: it is clear, logical and written in a simple, yet vivid, language. This book lays a good foundation for your further inroads into the field. It is worth the money!

Excellent Introduction to Organizational Behavior,
By Jeffrey D Purtee (Reno, NV USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Organizational Behavior (Paperback)
Not for nothing is this such a hugely popular textbook in graduate level organizational behavior classes. It is clear, well structured and easy to follow, with enough real world examples to keep the topic interesting. Even were I not in a class that required this book, it would be a very worthwhile read for a solid introduction to this subject.

Objective, but...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Organizational Behavior (Paperback)
Robbins' book is objective and comprehensive of certain behavior in certain organizations. The interactions comprehensively covered are those where a person in a position of management and another in a position of non-management interact, while there is little coverage of interactions between peers (manager-to-manager or nonmanager-to-nonmanager) or between a person who is as well educated as his manager (eg a firm of knowledge workers). The interactive behavior that is covered in this book is representative of certain sections and levels of Fortune 500 companies as well as certain portions and levels of local and federal civilian government. It provides little to no insight into common interactions frequently occuring in small high-tech firms, medium high-tech firms, parts of large high-tech firms, or significant portions of military organizations (at the both intraenlisted, intraofficer, as well as levels between enlisted and officers).I've been assured and reassured by organizational professors that my next few thoughts are incorrect. Let me assure you, however, that the text is objective - it only lacks in scope of organizational behavior. Many of my common experiences within organizations seem to have limited coverage within this text. Though my time spent in studying this text was not a waste, my expectations of gaining insight into organizational behavior as I have experienced it within small to medium high-tech firms were far from fully satisfied.

It is a great text!,

I consider this book one of the most interesting and rich books I've ever read in the field of management and Organizational Behavior. The book has an outstanding topical coverage of the latest developments in the field along with a superb combination of theory and application. Copious real-world cases and graphical illustrations support the conceptual material, which help you grasp the sense of what you are reading. The language is highly professional and technical, yet simple and comprehensible. The Implications For Managers section accompanying each chapter has added a lot of business essence to this text. This book was prescribed in my Orgnizational Behavior course in the MBA program, and it has benefited me a lot!

Easy read,

This book was a requirement for a graduate level course I took at a local university. Since the instructor for the course was not as helpful as an instuctor should be, I learned everything from the textbook and the coure assignments. Good thing the textbook was an easy read. There is also plenty of space to write your own notes in the margins; except where the margins are used to provide definitions of key items.

A typical chapter has a quote, the objectives of the chapter, explains the topic of the chapter and then give research and back up. A Dilbert comic, and more terms are explained. The terms are listed in the side notes next to the paragraphs where they are found. Terms are in bold font and easy to find. The chapter ends with a summary and implications for managers and then a point and counter point section that relates to the topic material of that chapter. There are review questions, and critical thinking questions and then team exercise and internet search exercises. It is a very comprehensive coverage of the topic from the management to management perspective, but doesn't give as good information up and down as it does side to side. |
