A Decent Piece of Furniture, A Touch Pricey,
By tin can (Bay Area, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Organize It All Hazelnut Storage Bench (Kitchen)
I bought the "Island Collection Bench with 2 Drawers" for my entryway. I have a condo, and I needed a bench for people to sit on and take off their shoes when they come in. I have had it about a week now. Overall I am happy with it. It is attractive, functional, straightforward to assemble, and structurally sound. On the down side, while not flimsy, it still feels a bit like a cheep piece of furniture. I thought $100 was a bit steep.
Assembly is easy; follow the directions, and you cannot go wrong. Everything you need is included except for a philips-head screwdriver. The frame of the bench itself is made entirely of solid wood, which is good because it needs to be sturdy. The flat part on top of the bench is Masonite, though it is reinforced with cross pieces of solid wood, so there is no danger of falling through it. Most of the frame is bolted together using bolts that screw into pre-threaded sockets. The center support is held in place by wooden pegs. The drawers are mostly Masonite. Only their front and back panels are wood. They are screwed together with wood screws. Although the pre-drilled guide holes make assembling them easy, you will probably only be able to assemble them once; do not count on being able to repeatably assemble and disassemble this piece for shipping. One really nice feature that is not obvious from the picture is that the drawers and bench are symmetric. The bench looks the same from either side and the drawers can be pulled out from either side, so you could put this in the middle of a large entryway. My only major complaint is the cheapness of the rattan and the amount of Masonite. When assembling the drawers, I had them face-down on carpeting. The rattan splintered extremely easily when they slid around. The damage was not terrible, but my bench no longer looks brand new. While the critical portions of the bench are wood, and I feel there is little danger of it collapsing, the use of Masonite for the drawers gives this bench a cheap feeling. For $100, I would have like something slightly more substantial, so only four stars out of five. Make this $80 (or less) and it gets 5 stars.

Cute, but you have to assemble yourself... a bit stiff getting drawers in and out, but I like the color and bamboo design. The cushion is covered in white muslin which comes all wrinkled and too loose on the padding..also could have used a darker shade of white.. overall pretty good. Don't know if I would have bought it if I saw in person though...partical board (or similar) used in the bottom of drawers so can't put too much heavy stuff in them-- and we bought for storing shoes by the front door.

This bench is cheap with a capital C,

We love target and always purchase here. however, this bench is cheap! As soon as my husband put it together, one of the drawers broke (on the outside where you can see it). Also the drawers do not close properly and the cushion is cheap looking. The bench is also not very sturdy. I know it was only the price but it's not even worth that.
