Book Description

In a Weekend January 1998
It's now possible to keep track of balances on bank accounts and credit cards, create a budget and learn how to use it, track potential investments, project income tax, and plan for retirement, all with one simple program. This book offers much more than typical "how-to-use-the-software" books: in addition to learning the best-selling Quicken 98 software, readers of this unique book will lay the groundwork for sound financial planning.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

The great bull market storms on, and the odds are good that you fall into one of two camps. Maybe you've been investing frequently and would benefit by having investment tools to manage your additional money. Alternately, maybe your finances are a disaster of record keeping and you need to get things into shape in order to start investing. Quicken 98 Deluxe can benefit both kinds of people, and this book can help you get the most out of Quicken.

Organized around a weekend, this guide schedules certain lessons for Saturday morning, others for Saturday night, and so on. Since it seems improbable that anyone will spend every minute of a weekend exploring Quicken, this organizational structure has little practical utility. Still, the authors--one of whom is a certified public accountant--present a complete documentation of Quicken Deluxe 98 in these pages, and the book is valuable for that reason.

They begin by explaining the oldest feature of Quicken--the checkbook. After getting into computer-generated checks and online banking (some of the program's least-used features), the authors explain investment accounts. Quicken does a poor job of accounting for things such as options and warrants, shortcomings of the program that are certainly not the authors' faults. However, the reader would benefit from the inclusion of "work-around" ways to record more exotic transactions in terms Quicken can understand. Before wrapping up with an exposition of Quicken's planning tools, the authors explore reports, charts and graphs, and the tools Quicken provides for tax planning.

Quicken is generally intuitive, but it has some sticky parts. This book stands as a fine resource to help you through the obstacles.

The Author and Amazon's descriptions do not inform you up front that this is a WINTEL application book. In addition, the Author rambles in her explainations and the narative is cluttered with technicl asides that confuse the beginning user.

The Author would benefit from an exposure to "Information Mapping" Techniques in presenting her explaination of Quicken 98.

This is an excellent example of delibitating wordiness.

This review is from: Organize Your Finances With Quicken Deluxe 98: In a Weekend (Paperback)
If you really want to learn to USE Quicken in your everday finances, this book is the vehicle. It starts at the ground floor and slowly builds to cover all of the program's elements. From the simple checkbook, through investments, loans, internet access, on-line banking and investments, its all covered. You can work at your own pace and master each section before going forward. It's structured with logical break points that give you enough, but not too much in between. Using your own data for setting up and running the program makes it much more meaningful and useful. Intuit should pack this book with their program.
