Editorial Reviews

Trumpeter Lester Bowie's been a voice for all sorts of wide-ranging style wandering as a cofounder of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, and his own Brass Fantasy aggregate. This sextet's early-1990s output wandered unwaveringly toward a relatively single goal: Hammond B-3 soul jazz, fronted by a triple-decker of top-shelf horn players--led by Mr. Bowie's supreme trumpet. Steve Turre's trombone provides a more unrolled brass flooring for Bowie's upstart growls and more strictly claimed notes. The then very young tenor saxophonist James Carter shows himself a peer of Bowie and Turre by turning in honk-pocked and blurty R&B-tinged solos as well, adding yet an even more tightly focused brush with hard-hit notes. On Hammond (and great wordless vocalizations for one tune), Amina Claudine Myers handles the bass lines and billowy harmony with a churchy, soulful sound that ripples amid the twin percussion of Famoudou Don Moye and Phillip Wilson. This and Funky T Cool T make a knockout pair. --Andrew Bartlett
