5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive desk reference for every assistant.
How to do whatever is asked of you -- you name it, it's in this handy book. You'll find that a lot of thought goes into everyday, vital tasks, like keeping a phone sheet. Thankfully, someone else has already thought of everything.

3.0 out of 5 stars HOW TO BE A GOOD SECRETERY 101

This is a good introductory text on being a secretery or a receptionist. This would be most useful for people just starting out without any office experience who don't know what a spreadheet is. To anyone else the text is too basic, though it covers a wide range of office related matters and because of that this might be useful as how to reading for a newly appointed office manager with no prior experience. What this doesn't reveal are any tricks of the trade you would expect an old salt to have. Also disturbing is the casualness with which the author accepts the abuse she endured as secretery from the egotistical octopuses in the entertainment industry that she worked for.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for Beginners, April 6, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Organizer : Secrets & Systems from the World's Top Executive Assistants (Hardcover)
I was somewhat disappointed with this book. I am an Executive Assistant, and did not find too much information that I didn't already know. I was hoping for some insight from a wide selection of Executive Assistants, and there were different comments from the same 5 or 6 people. I do think it is a good book for someone who is just starting out, and I did appreciate a few of the sample worksheets.

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful if you have no administrative experience, July 22, 2000

This book is a useful one if you're new to the world of administration and have not worked as an admin or executive assistant before. However, I found that the tips and ideas the author provides are very basic common sense and really didn't get much new out of it. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone with a few years of admin experience under their belts.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money, September 22, 2005
This review is from: The Organizer : Secrets & Systems from the World's Top Executive Assistants (Hardcover)
I have 2 issues with this book:

1. Why is this book listed at $27-31, when it is printed $12.00 on the back? I feel ripped off.

2. This book is AMATEUR. I EXPECTED SOME GOOD INFORMATION, NOT "don't do drugs on your lunchbreak, it will affect your work," or "don't try to be cute, it is not professional." Another good tip I learned, "No screaming, swearing, or throwing things." Who needs to be told to NOT do this? Please. Oh, something else I learned, "Any hairstyle that requires a diffuser should be reconsidered." OMG Please.

This book is for an entry level assistant. I have been working as an assistant in corporate America for 10 years and needed something to motivate and refresh me. This isn't it. This is an explanation on how to organize files, answer phones and basic business etiquette. Perfect for someone starting out.

After seeing the cost for this book (over $74) I checked it out from the library. I read it in about 1 1/2 hours. Although it has some good tips, at this point is is quite dated. It is also a very general book on the executive assistant's role and if you're looking for more in depth, there's a lot better out there particularly some of the books out there by Joan Burge on being a star assistant. After reading into it, it starts talking about personal assistants (for celebrities and such) which again was very generalized in nature. I'm sorry, but I don't see how you can justisfy $74 for this little handbook. It's MAYBE worth $20 - and that would be if it would be revised to current standards - just the section alone on computers is quite laughable because it's so old.

I found the book very helpful. I had already been doing some of the "secrets", but this only made me feel better! There are many helpful hints and information on ways of the office, etc. Helpful for anyone starting out!

This review is from: The Organizer : Secrets & Systems from the World's Top Executive Assistants (Hardcover)
The book covers all the angles of how to be a great executive assistant, without being the boring "manual" so many career books turn out to be.
