2.0 out of 5 stars Huge dissapointment, November 8, 2001
This review is from: Orgasm (Hardcover)
I was looking forward to receiving this book. I've been a fan of Tony Ward's work--I especially like the quality of his photography, the graininess of his photos, the simplicity. This book seems like a collection of his throw-aways, photos that were unused in previous collections and exhibits of his work. Trying to see how many different body parts one can stick into female orifices grows tired after a while. Most of the couplings in the book are girl-girl, with the disturbing exception being of a girl with a deformed man who has no arms and stumps for legs. As I've already stated, the quality of the photos are nice and are in Mr. Ward's unique, grainy, black and white style, but the subject matter is tired and the book disappoints, and the randomness of the picture selection creates for a very disjointed effect--the book never gathers any steam and just trudges along. There's nothing erotic or sensual in the photos, and certainly little to do with orgasm. ...

4.0 out of 5 stars Ward's hardcore makes my mind squirm, July 17, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Orgasm (Hardcover)
"Orgasm" is hardcore, no doubt about it, but not the usual kind that stirs only the libido and the loins. Art? Nah. Stylish? Very! Ward sticks with one style, if you'll pardon the pun. All black-and-white, fearsomely grainy images, sharp focus, and most are shot with co-axial lighting, as with a ringlight around the lens, which is usually a telephoto. The result of such a setup is full illumination of the inside of any orifice in the image -- you know, like a girl's mouth as she gasps passionately. Just a few of the 95 images are other than X-rated. Ward's craft, style, execution, composition, timing, direction and casting are all very good. His models are stunning, very commercial beauties. One of the men in the book is obviously there for impact -- he's the most severely disabled person I've ever seen in such a setting. Does that finally start to make your mind squirm? How about hiding half the barrel of an 8-inch stainless steel Smith and Wesson .44 magnum? Is your mind squirming yet? Ward's images are aggressive, proudly evil, digging at the viewer, confronting me, making me THINK about pornography, moral arbiters, visual sex, and the fantastic imbalance of power between the aggressive, self-possessed actors and the passive, covetous viewers, between producers and consumers. Finally, Ward engages my mind, and he can't be "un-remembered". I hope that turns out to be a good thing. At the moment my mind is still squirming.

4.0 out of 5 stars really explicit?, January 24, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Orgasm (Hardcover)
Tony Ward was called to be the man who brought hardcore to mainstream. In this book you can see a lot of explicit sex-photos. But it is not really hardcore. But nevertheless it ia an exciting picture book containing a lot of beautiful and shocking fotos. Just as many other fotographers who tend in direction hardcore, Tony loves fetish art, but not only fetish art. Maybe the name of the book, "orgasm", is not the best. Reading this I automatically think about more slippery, more explicit hardcore- erotic-art. But maybe the time to show things like this in an art-book hasn't come yet. But it will...
