5.0 out of 5 stars Vintage Funk from the Vaults of Westbound ! ! !, October 22, 2000
This review is from: Orgasm: The Very Best of the Westbound Years (Audio CD)
Its hard to believe that The Ohio Players and Funkadelic were once label mates... with the exception of the Junie Morrison connection. And like Funkadelic and a lot of other groups that left that label for bigger fame, the band might have gotten more polished, but NOT more funky.

Listen to this album to hear a band less dominated by Sugar's trademark voice and the trademark ARP string ensemble, but a very urban sounding funk band crossing various musical thresholds... the horns are agressive, Junie's organ sizzles... the tunes bump, the album covers titilate (wonder whatever happened to the bald chick ?)... There's nothing soft... Tune like Pain, Pleasure and the Funky Worm make you want to bump.

If you like this album, keep an eye out for Junie's solo albums (which seem to go in and out of print) and other groups from that label including THE COUNTS, Funkadelic, Eddie Hazel and occasional WESTBOUND compilations !

5.0 out of 5 stars A great collection from Dayton Ohio's preZapp Prodigies, August 2, 1999

This review is from: Orgasm: The Very Best of the Westbound Years (Audio CD)
Novices to the funk music scene, take note. Purchase this and the CD "Ohio Players Gold" in lieu of the double CD "Funk on Fire" (Which is not bad, just, more or less, has OP at their peak and declining years) and get all you need to know about phunkay sounds. Granted, they bit a little morsel or two from James Brown, Parliament, Sly, but hey! What 70's funk band didn't, I ask you? This collection has the early Junie Morrison influenced cuts, "Pain", "Pleasure", "Esctacy", and the hard to find cuts "Funky Worm" and "Varee is Love"--a last dance cut at many a blue-lighted basement house party. Plus, it boasts a cover with OP's famous bald model--the one who was apparently the fantasy of many a school boy crush...the Mercury Records album models were ok--especially for "Honey"--but they just weren't like this bald one. Anyway, get it from Amazon.com, now, and have fun with those great sounds and great cover!

good cd for the funklovers only, not as popular as skin tight, and fire but all op fans should have this plus funky worm was sampled to death, this features junie morrison way fo he went funkadelic, the tracks for those who cannot understand is a group in their prime trying lots of experimenting, and creativity along with it, unsung heroes of rock, and fusion, while the players played every style of music known to man in one song at that, and the songs are quality. this was one of few groups who could give funkadelic, a run for their money.

5.0 out of 5 stars You can't get any better than this!, August 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Orgasm: The Very Best of the Westbound Years (Audio CD)
Finally, after all these years! All of the songs that put funk where it is today. Back then music was music and the Ohio Players lead the way. Every song on this cd is a hit! (or at least should've been). "Pain", "Pleasure" and "Funky Worm" are still slammin' nearly 30 years later. These guys were ahead of their time!

4.0 out of 5 stars Original Funk, June 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Orgasm: The Very Best of the Westbound Years (Audio CD)
This collection is essential for the critical funk fan. The music associated with the Westbound years (can you imagine having The Ohio Players & Funkadelic on the same label). "Pain", "Ecstasy","Funky Worm"," Varee is Love" & "Walt's First Trip". Funky beyond compare. The departure of Junie Morrison is evident in their later work ( he was so funky). The Players are always superb.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sex-soaked, groovin funk jams, September 17, 1998
This review is from: Orgasm: The Very Best of the Westbound Years (Audio CD)
The Ohio Players (especially from their earlier days on Westbound Records) should be required listening for funk fans and those interested in the roots of present-day hip hop. I always chuckle when I hear "Funky Worm."

CD also includes a bonus, unreleased track, "Ain't That Lovin' You (For More Reasons Than One)."

4.0 out of 5 stars For early devotees., December 5, 2011

The CD was "used" from the company was purchased as a gift. No complaints from the recipient. The Ohio Players were real musicians and there is alot of horns, bass, and jazzy sounding music. I purchased for ECastacy, Pleasure and Pain. I would recommend you purchase ONLY if you have some familarity with the group. If so, purchase a used CD, first. This is NOT the later years of "Love Rollercoaster and "Fire."
