Motorhead Reborn, January 31, 2010
This review is from: Orgasmatron (Exp) (Spkg) (Audio CD)
The first album to showcase Motorhead as a four-piece, and introduce us to guitarists Wurzel and the indomitable Phil Campbell. Along with the short-lived departure of Philthy Taylor, replaced by the talented but oft unsung Pete Gill, things were looking bleak for Lemmy, but the infusion of new players with new ideas and abilities seemed instead to bring out the best in everyone involved. A more modern production style was adopted as well and suddenly the band was faced with creating not just a great hard rock album, but a heavy metal monolith. The songs on Orgasmatron are incredibly catchy, and almost nothing resembling "filler" is to be found. As if the album itself wasn't enough, you get a bonus concert recorded in 1984, that contains the classics as well as then brand new single "Killed By Death". In short, if God ever made a hard rock album, this is what it would probably sound like.

One of their best, September 10, 2010
This review is from: Orgasmatron (Exp) (Spkg) (Audio CD)
I must say, there are 2 reasons why I delayed buying this release for 4 years: (1) the generally bad comments about the remaster in the reviews here and (2) I already owned the 2001 single-disc edition. First, I have no idea why so many people are finding fault with the remaster here. It's a vast improvement over the 2001 CD release. I think, however, that the original source recording must have suffered some permanent damage. On the 2001 single disc, there is a fairly glaring drop-out at the beginning of "Mean Machine". This 2006 remaster sounds better, but remains somewhat flawed at this particular moment. Other than that, this remaster sounds far fuller and more powerful than the 2001 remaster: the guitars aren't drowned-out by the cymbals, all of the flourishes on the bass guitar (for which Lemmy rarely gets attention) are clear and audible here, for that matter, the bass guitar is solid and powerful with a meaty amount of bass-frequency, and the mix is evenly-modulated and consistent throughout. These tracks have never sounded more powerful in my opinion. I have the original 1986 import vinyl, and this is an immeasurable improvement over that (and I'm a vinyl enthusiast). The live recording which makes up the better part of disc 2 is great in all the ways that live Motörhead recordings typically are (and if you feel that I should explain them here, I'd ask why you're even reading this). I've been a Motörhead fan since 1980. I've considered them one of the most important bands to me personally since 1982. "Orgasmatron" is one of my two favoriite Motörhead records (the other is "Overkill"--I can't decide which I prefer). I am cheered by the quality of this remaster.

Firing On All Cylinders!, April 19, 2011
This review is from: Orgasmatron (Exp) (Spkg) (Audio CD)
"Orgasmatron" proves once again that Motorhead is one of the greatest rock and roll bands ever to have graced the planet! This is rock and roll stripped down to its raw essentials, pumped full of steroids and firing on all cylinders! The extended, remastered, double CD version contains the 9 songs from the original record remastered in all their glory and a second CD featuring a blistering live concert from 1984 with Lemmy, Phil Campbell, Wurzel and Pete Gill. Although Motorhead has traditionally been a three piece power trio, I love the monolithic sound of the two guitar lineup. I wish they had pursued this sound further. Designed to be listened to at deafening volume "Orgasmatron" is powerful enough to take the enamel right off your teeth! It's right up there with my other two favorite Motorhead CDs; "Overkill" and "Ace Of Spades". A real treat for Motorhead fans, this CD is not to be missed.
