Orgasmic Birth is not strictly focused on the topic of orgasmic birth and has more general information about pregnancy, birth and postpartum which are related of course, but I was expecting something more focused on pleasurable labor and birth itself. I was hoping for a bit more of an in depth discussion on birth as a pleasurable, if not fully sexual, experience in terms of both the physiology of labor and birth and the emotional and embodiment aspects of opening to that kind of birthing experience. It does mention the information that I was looking for, but because of the way that it is organized (or rather, not organized) within the book, it is hard for me to walk away feeling like I got the information I wanted. The information given is also not much different or more detailed than other sources on the topic of birthing hormones (Sarah Buckley, Michel Odent) or brain wave states.
The book reads like a conversation with lots of tangents and information that one would expect to find in a different section randomly inserted into the middle of a chapter about something completely different (for example, episiotomy is discussed in the section about healthy food and exercise choices). This style may work for some readers, but I had a hard time with it so I'm wanting to put that out there to other folks who are considering this book.Read more ›
edit: I should mention however, that this book is highly geared towards home birth and also towards birthing sensually with your partner. Ideally, I would love to experience this, but where I live a hospital birth with a doula and nurse midwife is my best option right now, and the baby's father will not be there with me during labor and delivery. So, I have had to mentally edit some of the material in this book to work with my unique birth experience which is not the author's ideal. If you can do that, this book can be invaluable for a natural childbirth anywhere in any circumstance.
2nd edit: I wanted to give a second update after giving birth using the techniques in this book. For the last couple of weeks of my pregnancy I really focused on the hip rotation and opening that is described in the book and when the time finally came I was ready. Whenever the contractions got intense, I used the hip rotation and visualizations and also rubbed my belly in concentric motions. My doula also had me make low tones consistently. It was a wonderful, quick birth. My pain was greatly reduced and the labor was vastly more enjoyable than my first.
The book includes the following sections:
Part One- How to Have a Orgasmic Birth
Step 1- Know Birth
Step 2- Know Your Options
Step 3- Be Healthy
Step 4- Be Vibrantly Sexual
Step 5- Expect the Unexpected
Step 6- Orgasmic Birth, Orgasmic Life
Orgasmic Birth: Your Trimester by Trimester Guide
Part Two- The Stories
The information in this important birth book is presented in a clear way and through the shadowing in the formatting the reader can "feel" the emotions of the women. This reviewer wants to thank the authors for the enormous depth that you write with as it will benefit many birthing women.
