Orient CDD00001W,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Orient Men's CDD00001W 21 Jewel Hand Winding Movement (second Hand Hack Mechanism) Power Reserve Indicator White Pocket Watch (Watch)
I recently purchased my Orient CDD00001W from Amazon. The shipping took only 5 days for regular international shipping. I payed a bit more than usual because I live in Canada and thus had to pay duty. This is alright because the little pocket watch is wonderful. It keeps immaculate time. So far it has matched my luminox quartz perfectly over three days. I did a lot of research on Orient Watch company and came out with this, paraphrased, to clear up any misconceptions: Orient watch company does indeed make all their movements in-house, so each watch's movement is made in Japan. However, only the Japanese domestic models are cased in Japan as well as some of the more expensive Orient international models. Most of their watches available internationally will have a Made In Japan movement, will say so like Japan on the dial or Japan Mvt, but will be cased in China or Brazil. The company has about 130 key employees, about 600 factory workers, spread out between three factories, Japan, China, and Brazil. Now some legal stuff... Some people talk about what it takes to create Swiss Made... Swiss made watches only need to have 51% of their value messed with in Switzerland, this could be the final gear in a movement made of Chinese parts or simply the wages of the guy that polishes the case to be considered "Swiss Made" but let me say legal distribution of value for marketing and branding is not an indicator of quality. Swiss watches are good watches. Japanese law says that a watch can be made overseas in a factory owned and managed, to Japanese Quality Control standards, by Japanese and still be considered "Made in Japan." Or of course made within Japan itself. Differently, USA customs considers a watch who's movement is completely made in a country to be legitimately made in that country, this is called Country of Origin branding. So as far as importing watches into the USA goes, Orient's in-house movements make them all legally Made In Japan, even if the case was made or the watch was cased elsewhere. I say this because the Orient CDD00001W has an identical twin available in the Japanese market that is cased in Japan. Its model number is WV0011DD. I emailed Orient and they told me that the CDD00001W is cased in China and the WV0011DD is cased in Japan but both use the same parts, same movements, and are overseen by Japanese Quality Control managers. I hope this clears up any global market prejudices... Now the watch itself is solid stainless steel, is very small at about 40mm across--like a wrist watch. The movement is tight and responsive to winding, the polish is nice. In my opinion this watch is nicer than many priced at or above $1000. There is a high end Japanese sibling to this pocket watch with a similar movement priced at $1400. But this guy is an everyday luxury watch with everyday reliability that looks really good and feels really solid and is MECHANICAL. Another reviewer noted that the crystal on the back of his watch was made of two separate halves. All I can think is that he must have not noticed that there is a plastic protective layer on top of the crystal... you know, like when you buy a new phone or something and there is that peel away protective clear vinyl on top of the screen... same thing on this watch. The vinyl layer is striated and can give the illusion that the crystal is cut or split when in fact it is just the protective layer. Peel it off.
Pros: All things considered, build, material, even manufacturing origin, A+ Cons: Steel chain clasp does not swivel so removing the watch from a pocket can knot the chain.

Good things come in small packages,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Orient Men's CDD00001W 21 Jewel Hand Winding Movement (second Hand Hack Mechanism) Power Reserve Indicator White Pocket Watch (Watch)
The good: The Orient CDD00001W is well built and has a nice heft to it. The guilloché dial and the blue Breguet hands are attractive. The stem winds smoothly and requires little force to wind or to pull out to set. Unlike the second hand on traditional pocket watches, the second hand is "hackable," which means that the watch stops when the stem is pulled out. The watch is quiet - it is difficult to hear it ticking. The watch is well adjusted and gains or loses only a few seconds per day. The crystals are sapphire and resist scratching. The wind indicator shows how many hours of operation are left before the watch will need to be wound. The crystal on the back allows one to see the balance wheel oscillating and part of the escapement's motion if one looks carefully with a magnifier. The not so good: The watch is rather small and the numbers on the wind indicator are difficult to read. Not much of the movement's mechanism is visible through the back crystal. It would be more attractive if the movement were partially skeletonized or had a less massive bridge so that some of the gears and the escapement were visible through the back. This watch is a good value. It should last a lifetime if well cared for and regularly serviced. Amazon is an authorized Orient dealer, which means that warranty service is available.

Amazon customer service is great as they resolved my issues by providing a quick refund. Having said that, my advice is DO NOT PURCHASE THIS WATCH. After losing the chain for this watch, Amazon sent a new watch and chain. However, I found that the see-through crystal covering the back of the watch had been assembled at the factory utilizing two separate halves (take a look at the Amazon product photo of the back of the watch and notice how the see-through crystal is in one piece. Now imagine there is a line showing across the center of the see-through crystal at the point where the two halves are joined together by a clear adhesive - very shoddy workmanship). I will never trust this watch company again and therefore never purchase another Orient Watch product.
