The Orient Story
The Orient Story Orient Watch was formally established in July 13th, 1950 in Tokyo. Orient Watch has focused on mechanical watch making, specializing in self-winding watches using only our in-house movements. Orient is considered one of the "Big Three" watch companies in Japan, but what sets them apart from the competition is that they have dedicated themselves in the advancement of mechanical watch making. The Orient Watch Company produces their mechanical movements in-house at their facility in Japan. These movements are dedicated for the use Orient's own mechanical watches. This list of industry abnormalities with the consideration of being one of the most affordable choices makes Orient an exceptional experience in the world of time keeping, and yet remains as one of the most obtainable.

Orient is a brand unlike any other... It is profoundly unique.

The Orient Mako II is a handsome watch, superbly made, and all in all, is still a fine value.

The Orient Mako has a great reputation among watch fans and it deserves to be a more widely known brand to the public at large. This watch, a redesign of the "entry level" Orient diver is meant to be a larger more fashionable design, and is a handsome watch. However, it has a few issues when compared to its cheaper first generation cousin (which is sold for 30% less list price, far more discounted) as of this writing.)

Orient is a small Japanese company that is partially owned by Seiko. They've been around for more than 50 years, and their claim to fame is that they are a mechanical watch producer that designs and makes 100% of their movements in-house. The in-house designation is significant as it means the company does more than just buy off the shelf designs but rather is directly involved in creating and tuning the mechanical heart of their product. Rolex is know for their in-house work, but even such costly brands as Omega, TAG Heuer, and Breitling have most of their movements made for them by other companies (ETA for the most part). To have a finely crafted automatic watch in this price range that has been designed and manufactured by the seller is rare to say the least. The watches are also hand made, and in Japan as well.

As mentioned this is an automatic watch. The watch cannot be hand wound so you need to shake it to start it, and then it winds itself as you move your arm during the day - no batteries needed. The timekeeping is a tad less precise than a quartz, and for this movement (Orient's 469) the manufacturer states you can normally expect to lose up to to 20 seconds slow or fast each day. (More on this later.

This watch is phenomenal to say the least. It's holding up well against my other watches that are worth 5 times as much. The size, and the weight of the watch is design for men. If you're looking for something small and light in weight - this is not the watch for you. The only test I have left for my new watch is the test of time, and I've done my research on Orient watch before my purchase - it hasn't disappointed me yet.

I read a few other reviews, apparently from folks more knowledgeable about this matter than I am, so this review is a little bit more amateurish.

The watch is and has exactly what I want and expected (reliable, mechanical, more than sufficiently waterproof for shower or pool). It has a very clean classic look that works in the office, after hours, dressed up or down.

I am fine with the accuracy: I don't need super accurate timekeeping and the watch already exceeds my needs. My watch is less than a minute off over a week but I am not a last minute type for meetings etc. so I usually allow for more time than the watch would be off. When I say less than a minute, it does not necessarily mean 59 seconds; fact is, i couldn't see any deviation after a week, but I didn't set the watch ueber-correctly to the second to begin with. She might have been off 5, 6 seconds to begin with and that's roughly what she is off now, too.

The price feels like I a steal.

Overall, one of the best buys for me lately.

Never have I gotten so much, for so little. Do a little research and you'll find Orient is a great brand that gives a lot of bang for the buck. In-house watch movements, a rarity in the watch industry by itself, constructed to perfection with an obsessive attention to detail. Watch forums are littered with posts from owners reporting chronometer level accuracy. (Mine runs a few seconds fast a day and I reset every couple of weeks or so, when it becomes noticeable)

The deep blue face and 60 click bezel pop with color. The hands are exquisite in their shape. The indices, with their beveled inner edges and wonderfully reflective qualities just put the final finish on what, in my opinion, is one of the best looking diver watch faces that I've seen. As stated elsewhere, if lume brightness is your thing, you will not find that here, but everything else about the watch more than makes up for that. The case is wonderfully shaped down to its three surfaced posts, which really add a nice character line down the side of the watch. Not too heavy and not too big, this is just right on a 6.75 or larger wrist. (If you have smaller, take a look at the Orient Blue Ray, it too is a great watch which also does wrist time on my left arm) Whether you keep it on the stock bracelet or switch it out for a navy blue, 5 ring NATO strap, or something in a rich leather (also available somewhere here on Amazon), it's going to look great. Right now I know the blue is sometimes hard to come by, but this watch comes in a variety of colors, so there should be something to strike a chord.

I can't say enough good things about this watch or this brand in general.
