The lume (luminous material) is very strong.

I immediately replaced the bracelet with a zulu nato style grey strap with PVD hardware, and its perfect for climbing and swimming and such.

I love my Orient Raven Ray but there are three things you need to know before you buy an Orient watch:

    1. Their US customer service has a pretty bad reputation and my experience was no different. Long wait times for repairs and parts, terrible communication, etc. They seem to respond better when you mention contacting their Japan corporate offices to complain.

    2. Don't buy from Orient's website unless you like paying too much for things. Don't fall for their gimmicky marketing and free watches. Even with their "huge" discounts, the watches can be had elsewhere for much better prices if you shop around.

    3. Prices fluctuate wildly. The price today is over two hundred...I paid less than 2/3 that price a few months ago when I bought my Raven Ray.

I have a few Orient watches and I have nothing but good to say about them. Orient's Ray series is no different and I think they are one of the best deals in watches right now. The bracelet is pretty dang nice considering the price you're paying for the watch (unless you bought at the Orient website...lol). It does have hollow end links, but the rest of the links are solid steel (not folded like a lot of lower priced watches). The bracelet on the Ray is better than the one that came on my Seiko SKX007 that cost nearly twice as much. My Mako (very similar to the Ray) wears it's stainless steel bracelet but my Raven Ray sits on a military green NATO strap with PVD hardware. It's one of my favorite watches.

The black IP coating on the watch itself seems very durable so far. Granted, I've only had the watch for a few months but not a single ding or scratch yet. I can't speak for the bracelet because it was taken off immediately after purchase because I wanted to wear it on the NATO strap.

This is my first Orient and first auto watch. Gotta say, I really like it. I waited several months to write this review so it wasn't one of those useless "I just opened the box and it looks awesome" reviews. (No offense.) I did however have a few issues which I then resolved through customizations.
    1. I found the mineral crystal to be very scratch prone. You may not but within a few weeks I had some good sized scratches. I am far from a fanatic about babying my watch nor am I clumsy with it. I buy stuff to use (particularly outdoors in the mountains). I was disappointed by this so I had the mineral crystal replaced with a sapphire crystal. Win. So glad I did. Much more durable and there is a nicer clarity with the improved crystal. It only added about 60 bucks (http://www.newatchworks.com/) to the cost of what is a great value so I had no problem with this upgrade.
    2. Secondly, I dont like the bracelet (or metal bracelets in general) and have my Orient on a Horween leather nato strap and let me tell you this watch on a dark leather strap looks excellent. Wait, I mean it looks terrible. Don't do it. (I get lots of compliments.) Obenauf's LP (the best leather protectant in the world, FYI) on the strap keeps it from taking in water or getting funky from sweat and smells great, in my opinion.
    3. The pins are weak sauce. I upgraded to larger pins which can be purchased on ebay for 5 bucks. Stronger and more durable. Recommended.

I have had no problem with accuracy as long as its used regularly to keep a good charge. Lume is great. Even after 7 hours in the dark I can still make out the time. Thats as good as I need lume to be.
I havent tested this watch as a diver since I am not one and I wear it on a leather strap.

I've been getting several comments on the train regarding this watch. I immediately replaced the bracelet with a zulu nato style grey strap with PVD hardware, and its perfect for climbing and swimming and such. The lume is outstanding, staying visible all the way until morning. This is going to be my go to watch for adventuring.

Orient is a solid, quality maker. I have several of their models, the MAKO and the RAY. Both are very good watches, and among my favorites. In build quality, workmanship and finish these Orient's are every bit as good as my $200 Seiko dive watches (SKX007 and SKX009). I am totally happy with both, although this review is about the RAY.

The RAY has traditional diver's styling with round hour markers and a high-visibility dial. This one is Black dial, Black plated case and matching black plated stainless band. They also come in Black dial, Orange dial and a Dark/Navy Blue dial, each with silver stainless cases and bands. All the dials have a rich, iridescent texture which reflects and changes in various lighting. Very attractive effect.
The bezel is unidirectional and clicks quietly but precisely. These are certified to 200 Meters so these are true Scuba watches, not just wannabe's. Faces are easy to read underwater, and luminescence is good (and lasts about 4-5 hours in the dark, which is about par with my SEIKO's).
I'm not obsessive about accuracy, but I find these are accurate to within a minute or two every couple of days, and that's acceptable to me. The day/date is easy to read and operates off its own winding stem.
These feel really good and solid on your wrist. I'm very pleased. They are not 'big' watches by current standards, and not gaudy or hey-look-at-me, but they are a good size and they exude a quiet quality where workmanship matters more than a designer name or high price-point.
They're durable. I don't baby my watches at all, yet I can find no scratches or marks on the silver stainless case or crystal after about two years of frequent wear. This black case however has some very minor wear at the usual points.
