Editorial Reviews

The first volume of Orient Occident - released in 2006 - turned out to be a landmark in Jordi Savall's discography. For the first time, the maestro explored an extra-European repertoire, demonstrating the same musicological expertise he had shown with composers like Marin Marais. The album soon became a best seller. The second volume in this exploration focuses on Syria, alternating instrumental and vocal pieces. Musicians from Syria, Lebanon and Israel play alongside Hesperion XXI and illustrate the artistic and humanist process we have come to expect from Jordi Savall.

Biography

Jordi Savall is an exceptional figure in todays music world. For more than thirty years he has been devoted to the rediscovery and performance of neglected musical treasures as a soloist and director of his three ensembles. He has restored an essential repertoire to all those with ears to hear it. Except for the happy few who already revere it, the viola da gamba, is an instrument so refined ... Afghanistan, Serbia, Syria. Jordi Savall's introductory essay spells out his frustration at the apparent impotence and paralysis of governments in the face of both past and continuing human rights abuses throughout the world. His response is to attempt unification through music, both with his Pro Pacem project and through recordings such as this, which bring together musicians from inside and outside the areas of conflict in celebration (and sometimes lamentation) of a culture.

Orient-Occident II's accompanying book is an exquisitely illustrated companion to the recording. Alongside the pictures of 17c Ottoman ceramics, 14c Arab miniatures and 19c Syrian photographs we have a documentation of the recording itself. As in recent albums such as Balkan Spirit, Armenian Spirit and Orient-Occident 1200-1700 this took place high up in the hills beyond Barcelona at the Castle of Cardona, the ancient chapel providing a detailed yet warm acoustic. Virtuoso musicians from around the Mediterranean region join Jordi Savall in an intimate evocation of the essence of this antique Arabian land.

Music from Sephardic Spain, Renaissance Italy, Israel and of course Syria itself is intercut with Arabic chant and oud improvisations in a recital of myriad hues; the rebab, vielle and ney echoing age-old themes of devotion, love and loss.

I hope to compliment and continue the review posted by JB - December 2013. This music is for everyone, should be listened to repeatedly and savored for the soul. Jordi Savall has no equal. His colleagues in music are extraordinary and also a gift to the world. The interpretations are beautiful, sad, uplifting, mesmerizing, haunting. Yes - let us all seek peace for the world, but first start here and let this bring peace to you. I recommend: Orient-Occident I, Esprit d'Armenie, Istanbul, La Sublime Porte - Voix d'Istanbul, Esprit des Balkans,
and in advance Bal Kan - Honey and Blood (March 2014).

I knew nothing about Syrian music and found this collection to give a good sampling of Syrian music as well as an excellent introduction to the overall history of this complex area. This collection was put together recently so there are comments about the current dreadful civil war. The notes are multilingual so you could have fun trying out your language skills. The songs are translated and cover civil and religious music. I have always enjoyed Hesperion products.

I have heard this music performed at the early music festival held in Boston 2013. Jordy Saval is not only a fine Musician he is also a champion for peace. His books , essays and recordings prove to be a passionate plea for understanding the diversities as well as the similarities of cultures in this world.
