Book Description

September 1, 1995
The intricate patterning and rich hues of tribal rugs from Turkey, the Caucasus, and Iran have attracted collectors for decades. Twenty-four different designs from these rich traditions, carefully reduced in scale and accurately charted, make handsome small take-along projects. Designs can be worked on fine, medium or heavy canvas. The patterns have been gleaned from museum collections, and their origins have been carefully researched and documented.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

What an absolutely perfect craft Frank Cooper has come up with in these miniature needlepoint Persian, Caucasian, and Turkish carpets! They are simple, beautiful, unusual, and portable. The miniatures are typically between 6-9 inches in width and 10-16 inches in length, and though they are quite detailed, the stitches are not impossibly tiny. Cooper uses a #18 canvas (18 stitches per 2.5 cm), which allows these little jewels to work up surprisingly quickly. The instructions are plainly written; the charts are the book's only real drawback, as they must really be enlarged on a copier to be usable by the average needleworker. But the patterns are authentic, taken from rugs Cooper has studied closely in his travels, and the color photographs and the historical background he adds to each rug's description are alone worth the price of the book.

Review

Charted designs for needlepoint present color, miniature oriental carpet designs derived from tribal rugs from Turkey and Iran. Choose from over twenty different designs, reduced in scale to fit anything from small area rugs to dollhouse furnishings. Also appreciate the careful, authentic documentation which has gone into creating these miniatures. -- Midwest Book Review

This is the book you've been looking for if you want to make pillows, footstools or "whatever" for a room that would welcome orientals. The reproductions are beautiful, the charts are clear. I just love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for learning about rugs and making them!, July 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Oriental Carpets in Miniature: Charted Designs for Needlepoint or What You Will (Paperback)
I adore this book. While I have owned it for a few years, I have only recently begun to create some of the rugs featured in the book. In the interim, I've enjoyed reading the history of the rugs, looking at the beautiful pictures as well as appreciating the complexity of the designs.

Last but not least, I have also been grateful for Frank Cooper's attitude towards the projects. It is apparent that he does not expect you to slavishly follow his charts to the last detail. If you feel like making some color or design changes of your own, then go ahead. He certainly felt free to make changes as he worked the rugs (after charting them) and he tells the reader all about it in each write-up.

5.0 out of 5 stars glorious patterns, December 30, 1999

I don't do needlepoint but used one of the Persian rug charts for a bead knit bag. The charts are big, no small projects here, but they are striking and wonderfully detailed. Really striking color photos.
