Review

"I love to be able to recommend the best for my readers, and Benjamin's unique talent of merging two Japanese art forms- origami and bonsai, creates an exciting new form of paper art! This unique book "kit" will teach you the art step-by-step with simple illustrated tutorials, and even a DVD to help you along! You can create beautiful delicate paper flowers and leaves and essentially create your own unique paper bonsai!" —Suzy's Artsy-Craftsy Sitcom

"I've purchased a few origami flower kits in the past and the paper with this kit is by far the best suited for creating lifelike flowers." —About.com Origami

"Origami Bonsai is lovely, as are all of Ben's books, instructional DVDs, and paper creations." —Ann Martin, All Things Paper

"I can't wait to make more of these origami bonsai sculptures as center pieces for our Thanksgiving dinner and for holiday decorations. Perhaps I could also give them out as holiday gifts. I think this kit itself makes a great holiday gift to people who loves craft projects as well!" —Yuki's Origami Blog

"With the holidays approaching, folding an origami bonsai would be more thoughtful than spending hours at the mall or online. Highly recommend!" —Cindy Ng, Origami Blog

"This origami kit from Tuttle Publishing contains several tools to teach you how to make unbelievable floral designs and sculptures." —Dana Byerwalter, All Free Paper Crafts

More About the Author

I'm a math teacher and former computer entrepreneur - turned artist, author and inventor! My education was highly technical; engineering, mathematics, and economics. When people began referring to me as an "artist" I felt confused and a little embarrassed. I had never considered the matter.

Over time I have come to understand that I am an artist; in fact everyone is an artist. Each person combines their unique perspective, a lifetime of seeing, touching, feeling and experiencing, into their work. My goal is to unleash the artist in you. I consider myself no more than a facilitator. My techniques are designed to be simple, yet they have infinite possibilities.

Perhaps you will express your artistic side, just like I do, with a discrete emphasis on the technical, or maybe you will discover an aspect of this art form I have not yet explored. Whichever path you choose, I hope you will enjoy following it, and my books are here to help you along the way.

Origami Bonsai is my first book and one of three books in a series for creating botanical sculptures made from paper.

Origami 101 is a book that takes several new approaches to teaching origami. My hope is that this book will make origami accessible to the scores of people that previously considered it too complex.

You can see many more pictures of Origami Bonsai sculptures made by people from all over the world, as well as a free magazine devoted to Origami Bonsai, and folding videos and lots more at http://www.OrigamiBonsai.org

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book but it is surprisingly thorough and greatly illustrated with step by step directions for not only building your own origami bonsai sculptures but also how to care for and ship them as gifts or to customers as you choose. It's one of the coolest books I've read on origami that provides a PRACTICAL application that melds two crafts together. There are advanced topics on scaling, selecting props and accessories and more. I love this book and highly recommend it to others.

This is by far one of my most loved books. I came across his etsy site first and ooohed and awed and even drooled some over his work. Then I saw he had released a book and I just had to own it. The book focuses more on technique and has very little in the way of diagrams, but that is what I loved most about this book. The author really took the time to explain how to become a successful origami bonsai folder. He chatters on about taking walks in the woods with his dog and finding inspiration in nature. I especially loved how he talks about painting paper and the steps to go through. I love to fold flowers and often times became frustrated with the paper because it simply didnt capture what I wanted it too. Now I look forward to painting my own. The book is very informative and has inspired me. I look forward to more releases from this author.

Of course origami and bonsai belong together! I really like how the author explains his thought process for making each project and why he recommends certain supplies for his projects. It all makes perfect sense. I love this book!

What a beautiful book. It's hard to say which book I love more. "Origami Ikebana" or this one. The directions are clear and concise. The book itself is printed on high quality paper and has beautiful photographs and illustrations. Mr. Coleman is a generous writer who shares years of experience with those of us new to this art form. I thank my Dear One for giving both books to me as a gift every time I read them. Hunter
