The "woman doing life" in Erin George's stunning first collection is at once a prisoner serving a life sentence and a woman continuing to weave the complex web of severed and ongoing relations that is her life. From the opening, title poem, wrenching in its restraint, George locates the true horror of imprisonment in a mother's separation from her children. As she folds and unfolds the "origami heart" of her daughter's much-read letter, the connection between them, like the creases in the paper, is "soft, threatening severance, / but still holding." Through these poems of memory and longing, Erin George struggles to hold on.

Prison Poetry,

I purchased this book after starting a ministry at the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women where the author is serving her life sentence. While I do not visit with the author, I am close to one of her "wing" mates and friends. Although I enjoyed reading the poetry by Ms. George, some of it was a bit much for my vocabulary. I met the author this past year and find her to be a very talented, educated woman with a great heart and love for her family and friends. While I am not an educated poet, I will treasure Erin's book and am thankful to have had the opportunity to meet her.

Such expression from mind and heart,

Erin's poetry overwhelms, humbles, delights, and at times shocks me. Mostly I am staggered at the thought of such a mind and heart being entrapped within the system that bestows no release, regardless of circumstance. Comfort for me comes in that she is at least able to liberate her talent. I look forward to future writings. Future liberation.

Erin writes from her soul and her heart and her loving spirit. I love this young woman who is facing life in prison, without the possibility of parole, for a crime she did not commit. Her poetry is so beautiful; she is so talented. The words will grab hold of you and linger.....
