This book teaches origami using colorful photographs instead of line drawings. This method allows the reader to see easily and clearly whether to fold to the front or back, and exactly what the paper should look like after each step, in "real life." The origami projects are grouped by the "base" figure needed for each, so the reader can learn each "base" and then choose which final figure to complete. This book demonstrates that many different origami figures actually start from the same beginning folds, which makes it easier to learn new ones, and eventually you could even make your own original creations. The book includes all the traditional figures that the word "origami" brings to mind. Complete photographic instructions are included for every figure, on every page. With this book there is no risk of wasting your money just to find a few scattered photos, and a lot of nearly useless line drawings, which is typical of many other origami books. I had always been frustrated by origami; since childhood I have periodically purchased beautiful paper and interesting-looking books, only to put the paper on a shelf to collect dust because the instructions were too difficult. But with this book, it was so fun and easy to understand the instructions, I ran out of paper and had buy more! If you buy this book, your only problem will be where to put all the figures....

This beginning origami book delivers what you wish every origami book had: absolutely clear instructions, taking you step by step through each figure offered. The photographs are precisely taken to illustrate exactly how to fold the paper and how the figure looks from several angles at various stages. There is absolutely no confusion. In addition, the book shows how with the same initial folds, one can branch off into several different figures. At our public library, we hold origami workshops for children twice a year, and this is our text. My only criticism would be with the binding: we wear out our copies within a couple of years!

This book is great for beginners. Every fold is shown, which is not true of more advanced books.

Are you a frustrated folder? Do you have trouble following traditional origami diagrams? Then this book is for you. Clear, precise step by step photos lead the beginner through a variety of models. I was never able to figure out how to fold origami before, but this book taught me how to do it. Believe me when I tell you, that says a lot for this book!

I have to say, this is probably the best book on the market for the beginner. It takes the reader from the most simple instructions to the more elaborate designs within a slim 66 pages of brightly colored and very clear photos. The folds are never in doubt, as they can be in books that depend more heavily on line drawings and simple sketches alone. Considering its very reasonable price, it's a steal. The models cover a wide range of objects: flowers, fish, birds, animals, furniture, architecture, boxes, and ornaments.

For the beginner--or even for the individual with more randomly acquired expertise--the book is ideally arranged in a logical succession of the "bases." Sakata begins with instructions for folding the base itself then progresses in a very logical manner, showing what objects can be folded from the base. Not only does this help the beginner learn from a strong foundation, it allows the advanced student who learned in a less organized fashion--like myself--to see just how all the objects they learned to fold are related. Although I have books that have said, "this is the bird base," or whatever, I have not seen one as carefully arrnaged to visually show how the models evolved from a common design. For the advanced student this careful organizational chart might actually assist in creating models of your own, since it permits you to see just how the manipulation of a single line, fold or pocket, can produced amazingly different results.

For the advanced student "Origami" has very little new except organization. For a beginner, however, this is probably THE most solid foundation on which to learn the art that I have ever come across.

I personally found this one of the best beginner's origami book. It does not skimp on the "origami portion of designs" using square paper for all the designs and maybe scissors for two diagrams. The instructions are very clear and they are great for any beginner for learning how to make diagrams and interpret the directions for other diagrams. Most of the models are traditional but all in all, in my opinion, it is the best book for beginners.

One of the better books that I have seen for the beginner. Step-by-step photographs make it easy to learn. It quickly re-acquainted me with the art after a 14-year break from paper folding.

Twelve years ago, I bought this book. I have since bought at least 15-20 different origami books. Hideaki Sakata's is the best book for beginners by far.
One detail: using the squash fold to make a crane base is better than several other books that show the crane base differently.
You can buy other books, but if you are a beginner, you will find no better.

this book was listed as being in very good condition. it was in poor condition. it was dog eared and water marked. the person for whom i ordered it was willing to accept it but i would not have done so.

I have been looking for an origami book that I could use with my two young children (ages 4 & 6). We tried several, but all of the instructions were too hard for even me to understand! This book has easy to follow instructions, using a few "bases" from which to make many different things. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to do origami with beginners!
