New Master of the Action-Thriller,
By HUKI365 (Perth, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Origin (Glassworks Legacy) (Kindle Edition)
In this book we have the beginnings of an author with action/thriller chops to rival the grand masters of the genre. Matthew Reilly should be shaking - this is as good as Ice Station and Temple.
The plot itself is a a "better" version of Heroes - albeit without the tiresome characters that populate that TV show. The writing is crisp and clear and packs a punch. Although the beginning of what is sure to be a rollicking series this book is an excellent stand alone story. No punches are pulled. The first page sends you flying from an exploding helicopter, and within 50 pages a twist is thrown that turns the book from excellent action fodder to simply brilliant story telling. Highly recommended.

Sitting between Clive Cussler, Michael Crichton, and Matthew Reilly, 'Origin' is a well written action thriller that races along, but still has humour when it is least expected. Roy Govier has captured a likeable hero and villain in the plot. So compelling are their backgrounds, that at one point I demanded to know from my son, who had already read the book, to confirm the fate of a certain character. His advice to me, which I will pass on with agreement: "Read the book."
This young author has written a well thought out novel, and you as the reader, will feel the dynamic power that Roy unleashes in each page as the plot and subplots unfold. You will find yourself unable to put the book aside for such incidentals as food, sleep, work etc. I will take this time to congratulate Roy Govier on a brilliant novel, and I eagerly await his next literary work. Well worth the purchase!

Origin: the glassworks legacy is a series of fist fights, gun fights, big explosions and chase sequences-not to mention a Nonstop action that rival like of Matthew Reilly if you're the fan of him )and video games. Origin is a cross between Die hard meets Wolveline. You will be eager to read it and when is the next Glassworks legacy.

A lot of potential...,

I really wanted to enjoy this book thoroughly, but some sketchy writing (needing good editing) and extended action sequences marred that experience.
This book contains some HUGE action sequences, travelling over 50 odd pages. It becomes exhausting and you just want the action to pause for a little. This book is much more in it's element in the breaks between the action. The author seems to be capable of building some solid characters and dialogue, but then ruins it with un-necessary cheesiness and unbelievability. The main character is likable enough, but reminiscent of Dirk Pitt: nothing really injurs him and his feats are completely ridiculous. Characters need flaws to be easily accesible, such as Pathogen. But the main character seemingly has none. And the writing sometimes has the feeling of a teenage fantasy, with grammatical and punctuation mistakes and over-use of particular phrases. It didn't ruin the story but was annoying having to re-read sentences to insert the correct word or rephrase. All in all, this tale has a lot of potential, but I hope later iterations fix these problems. Good luck Roy.

They say that no one writes action like Matthew Reilly, but if there's one writer who can outgun the famous Australian author, it's his countryman Roy Govier.
ORIGIN is a relentless, high-octane thrill ride filled with unforgettable characters. The plot has to be the most innovative I've seen in years, a fantastic take on conventional action thrillers that blends elements of sci-fi/fantasy while staying chillingly realistic. And the prose is absolutely beautiful -- vivid, striking and haunting. For a minor spoiler: Roy Govier's depiction of the afterlife is as emphatic as the ending of Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. If you're looking for a fun and memorable adventure, grab ORIGIN. And watch out for Roy Govier -- hopefully there's more to come! |
