Biography

Born Armando Anthony Corea in Chelsea, Massachusetts on June 12, 1941, he began studying piano at age four. Early on in his development, Horace Silver and Bud Powell were important influences while the music of Beethoven and Mozart inspired his compositional instincts. Chick’s first major professional gig was with Cab Calloway, which came before early stints in Latin bands led by Mongo Santamaria… Read more in Amazon's Chick Corea Store

5.0 out of 5 stars stunning jazz from a modern master, July 11, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Origin: Live At The Blue Note (Audio CD)
This live album from piano extrodinare Chick Corea will bring your speakers to life. Each song glistens with talent, not only from Corea but from every member of the band. The complex, soulfull drumming of Adam Cruz stands out particularly. The sweeping "Double Image" keeps the listener fascinated for it's entire 17 minute running time, as practically every musician in the bands solos. And the remake of "It Could Happen to You" is also well worth mention (all 7 tracks are worth mention, for that matter). I highly recommend this cd to anyone, whether they're seasoned jazz afficianados, or new to the genre. You won't be dissapointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jazz Meets Classical---with a swing edge, December 23, 2007
By
This review is from: Origin: Live At The Blue Note (Audio CD)
Chick Corea is no stranger to new methods. With Return to Forever, his duets with Herbie Hancock, and the Elektric Band recordings; Chick has made a career of pushing the boundaries of music and magic.

Chick starts the pieces with nice, melodic (aligned to Mozart) introductions followed by the band joining in some unique, yet fully understandable harmonic progressions. Taking bias to minor and modal phrasing--this music is optimistic, pessimestic, and overall very adventurous.

Those who love Chick Corea will love this album. Also, this album reminds me of some the latin jazz lions (David Sanchez, Antonio Sanchez, Miguel Zeon, etc). With leads in the piano, alto sax, and flute voices--it has a Carribean feel to a jazzy set lending to longer, sonata-allegro classical structures. Think along the lines of Mozart crossed with Sonny Rollins with a soft, pleasant feel similar to the waters of Aruba.

Fans of jazz and Bartok, Mozart, Bach (at times, the phrases Chick plays reminds me of Glenn Gould's Bach recordings) will truly treaure the gold this album is.
