This review is from: Set of 2, Original FSP Lawn Mower Wheel Kit 193144, Includes 2 Dust Covers # 189403. Has Metal Bushings, Not Plastic.
My mower takes Sears wheels 180658. Sears told me that the 193144 kit would not work. The wheels looked the same from the picture and AMC Parts Store even sent me detailed dimensions, so I way pretty sure these would fit, which they did. They are an exact match to the wheels on my mower. Even the number stampings are the same. From Sears, the wheels would have cost me $63. As far as the gears wearing out, I've had no problems. I only needed to replace the wheels because the rubber tread was worn down bald.

I'd been shopping for the front drive wheels for my Sears lawnmower and was put off by the Sears price. After identifying the part number, I found these replacements were remarkably less, fit perfectly and seem to be more ruggedly constructed. Shipping was prompt and I saved a boatload on the price. I'd by from these folks again!

They fit fine, they have good grip. However, now that I've used them for awhile I wonder if I should have left the old bald wheels on there. You have to remember when you are turning around to lift the wheels off the ground, or disengage the self-propel, otherwise these wheels want to grip and grip and it's wreaking havoc on the transmission. Everytime I hear the gears grinding I just think about how much shorter my mowers life is probably going to be because of these.
Aside from that, I didn't feel like going through all of the rig-a-ma-row to get the back half of the dust covers off, so I just left the old ones on there. I couldn't figure it out after a half hour so I decided to skip the dust covers. Other than that, they went on without a hitch.

Great price compared to Sears, who shows it on backorder. Received them in under a week too.
They fit perfectly, and include simple, easy to understand installation instructions. One thing to watch for other than the E-Clip: There is a very small and thin torsion spring inside the pinion gear assembly, and you have to make sure it stays in place when you put it back together. It holds a small pawl in place. I had to take the pinion gear assembly apart to clean it when I replaced the wheel assembly. Also, clean everything completely while you have it apart. Grass and dirt get caked into the pinion gear teeth, and get packed in so tightly that it's hard to tell when you have it all cleaned out. That's probably why some customers had the teeth strip out soon after replacing the wheels. That, or they ordered the wrong wheels and the teeth didn't match.

Perfect fit for my Craftsman 917.378070,

My Craftsman lawnmower model number 917.378070 has been a great mower, but the front wheels had become slicks after several years of use. They had literally no tread left at all.
With plenty of life left in the mower, I had wondered how difficult it would be to get new front wheels? As it turns out, thanks to Amazon, not hard at all. I changed them in under an hour. I could do it again in 15 minutes now that I know the tricky parts. The wheels seem to be of equal or better quality than the originals. They came packaged together and with a somewhat helpful instruction sheet. There are 2 kind of tricky parts: 1. The gear knob is held on by a...actually I don't know what it's called - not a kotter pin, maybe they call it an "E clamp"? It locks the drive gear on by sliding into a slot in the axle post. Whatever - maybe there is a special tool made for taking those off and on, but if there is, I ain't got one. I ended up using the edge of a screwdriver to tap it off. One of them came off a little too enthusiastically and I had to go hunt for it on the garage floor. I was more careful with the 2nd one. 2. Same piece; getting it back on. The first one goes on super easy. and you're thinking this is going to be a walk in the park, and you get the other wheel off, and put the dust cover on, the bushing washer, and the gear, and you try to put the clip on and the slot of the post isn't visible over the gear thingy. No room. The slot the clamp is supposed to slide into is buried and you can't get the clip on! Here's what you do - take the first wheel back off. (Or if you're reading this first, don't put the other wheel on until both drive gears are connected) Leave the pin on the drive gear, but push it's axle part towards the other side. It's a solid axle and you have to put some pressure on it for the pin to clear the other side. Hopefully that makes it easier for someone else someday, because it wasn't mentioned in the instructions. Maybe other mowers have a little more clearance for the clamp and it isn't an issue on those, but it gave me some trouble.

My Craftsman mower used wheels with part number 150340 and these wheels were a perfect fit. The outside diameter is a little bit bigger (about about 1/4" to 1/2") but it didn't cause any clearance issues when the mower body.

This purchase was to replace the front self propelled wheels on a Craftsman mulcher mower. This is exactly what is needed and very easy to accomplish. With bearings in the wheels should last a lot longer than the wabbily plastic bearings that I removed. Great purchase.

The ball bearings added to the wheels was a great idea. My Sears rear high wheel mower rolls very freely with these new front drive wheels. I did add lithium grease to the mower's drive gear and a little to the mating gear on the wheel. These replaced a set of Sears parts that were on the mower for only 1 season and didn't last. When you install these, be sure the grass shields fit well. The plastic shields were a little bent from sitting in the package. I put them in hot water for a little while, then flatten them by hand and ran cold water on them to set them again.

upgrade your self propelled,

This review is from: Set of 2, Original FSP Lawn Mower Wheel Kit 193144, Includes 2 Dust Covers # 189403. Has Metal Bushings, Not Plastic.
The wheel kit arrived well packaged and in short time. I noticed the wheel bearings are of the sealed needle bearing type, not plastic or soft metal bushings that came from the factory. This is an upgraded design. The new dust shields are included as these do wear out over time.
The main reason the front wheel drive self propelled systems fail are play in the wheel bearings/bushings which cause wear on the pinion and the wheels plastic drive teeth, also the dust shields get scraped upon by this play and allow grass and dirt to build up inside the wheels gear area, further damaging the system. The only improvement I recommend to this kit? Add both drive pinion gears as it would have been nice to have them replaced as well. Over-all, I am impressed with the kit's quality and the fast shipping service provided. |
