SOME REMASTERED VERSIONS IN THIS SET,
By
This review is from: Original Album Classic (Audio CD)
This review is only for those interested in sound quality. For reviews regarding content, please see other posts in this forum, or go to All Music Guide (dot com).
The first album, Talk Talk Talk and Forever Now are the 2008 remastered, expanded versions (see the links for these editions). However, "Mirror Moves" is the original audio version, and is sadly in need of remastering. The "Midnight To Midnight" disc is a remastered version, but has been subjected to some pretty harsh loudness compression, so beware. It also has the movie version of "Pretty In Pink" as a bonus track. As stated, there are no booklets in these Classic master Series sets; that info is made available on a label website.

Leading the New Wave,
This review is from: Original Album Classic (Audio CD)
The Psychedlic Furs captured the potential of a maturing punk rock sound on their initial two outings - The Psychedelic Furs (1980), Talk Talk Talk (1981) - which mostly baffled those compiling playlists for AOR radio stations, but built a loyal following of fans who were riding the new wave that briefly swept the record industry.
The 5-CD set includes all but one studio release from the 1980s - the aforementioned pair, plus Forever Now (1982), Mirror Moves (1984) and Midnight to Midnight (1987) - with the greatest hits collection, All of This and Nothing (1988), and Book of Days (1989) not included. Richard Butler explodes onto the stage on the debut album, as he comes very close to delivery the powerhouse vocal-style of John Lydon, but within a framework of guitars and an occasional sax. The band takes a huge stride with Talk Talk Talk, as Butler brings a maturation to his style in numbers like Pretty in Pink, Dumb Waiters and Like a Train. The emerging revolution of sound in the studio is heard on the next three albums, with the moody ballad, Love My Way, from Forever Now, the best example of smoothing over the rough edges through a cleaner mix. A leader in what became known as the post-punk era, Butler showed - at least early on - how the spirit of punk rock did not have to fade from the scene when its supposed revolution turned out to be a mirage.

Awesome Collection,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Original Album Classic (Audio CD)
I bought this through an Amazon seller with Amazon fulfillment for $20. That's just $4 per album. Each has it's own mini-lp sleeve. This is one of the biggest box set bargains I've ever seen. It definitely took me back and I forgot how much I really liked the Furs. Butler's distinctive voice and awesome lyrics made the 80's music scene something special. There were so many unique and incredible talents hitting the music scene back then and Butler was at the head of the pack. My only complaint would be the missing albums mentioned by others in their reviews, but this collection is well worth the price of admission even at the full Amazon price, but grab it at the lower price while you can. I was lucky enough to catch the Furs' tour this year- saw them a week ago from a front row seat in a small venue. If you have the opportunity to catch their live show, don't miss it. These guys still have it. Richard seemed ecstatic to be on stage and was pogoing all over the place. It was great seeing him enjoy the show as much as I did. Five stars for the collection and for the band.

The Psychedelic Furs album classic,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Original Album Classic (Audio CD)
The 5 CD set was the only complete selection of Furs songs that contained all the songs that I personnally like the most. I prefer to hear their songs as they were originally put together in the albums anyway. The greatest hits CDs were in my opinion incomplete. I would have prefered the CD set to all be remastered, but that would have most likely driven the cost up, which was very reasonable for 5 CDs. Delivery time was good, less than a week, right in time to get them a week before the local Furs concert; had to refresh on all my favorite Furs songs before going!

A great collection from the furs!,

First off, the only reason this 5 CD collection doesn't get 5 stars, is it's missing two studio albums.
Yes, I know it's an era collection, with extended remastered originals. But The Psychedelic Furs deserve a proper box set, and so do their fans! That said, if you love 80's music, and somehow never went deeper than "Pretty In Pink", you should be ordering this on Amazon while you read this. It's an eco friendly, compact packaging of the original recordings, so it will be the best 5 albums smaller than a toddler book you own! Now, enjoy your purchase when it arrives, and buy everything else from the boys once your hooked! |
