Very happy with this collection. Excellent value for 5 CD's. Nice packaging in mini original LP jackets. One note, lack of historical discographical info. As I was curious I now present a little chronological info:
Jazz Goes To College - 1954
Brubeck Plays Brubeck - 1956
Gone With The Wind - 1959
Brandenburg Gate Revisited - 1961
Jazz Impressions Of New York -1964
After all is said and done "BUY THIS!" I mean really...

Dave Brubeck - the top of college cool back in the day. These classic LPs are from the time period around the Time LPs and fill in the gaps in the music.

Not only is the music great. The packaging is great. But the price is great!

I would recommend the Time series, 5 cd box set be purchased first, and then this box set. I know this is a lot of Dave Brubeck but you want to be back then when it was cool to listen to Brubeck. And after you listen to Brubeck today you are still cool. This is not 2010 jazz but a take of jazz from back in the day from the college side of the tracks.

I would also recommend just about any of the Original Album Classics box sets. They represent great bargins for the CD collector / listener. Try these other box sets to find what the other side of the tracks were about and the hotter side of jazz from back in the day.

Only warning... check your glasses... the print on the CDs is very small.

I have not heard "Jazz Goes to College" in over 45 years, having lost my LP copy to years of wear and tear and packing and moving. "Brandenburg Gate Revisited" is a lush, rather unusual venture coupling the quartet with symphonic strings, an experiment which went quite well in my humble opinion, much better than the unions of other jazz performers with similar string ensembles. All in all, it was everything I expected. My only problem is that the liner notes appearing on backs of the individual sleeves are in very small print, a phenomenon I am more apt to blame on my accumulation of birthdays.

Bought this great 5 CD set almost what it would have cost me to buy the excellent Jazz Goes to College LP - which I wanted in my collection - as I purchased back in 1959 the follow up and even better Jazz Goes to Junior College. On top hereof I got 4 other recordings all highlighting why the Dave Brubeck quartet has always been one of my favorite Jazz bands. For the price paid and the quality of these recordings this is a true bargin.

Purchase both of the Sony/Masterworks by Dave Brubeck. I was concerned with some of reviewers comments on the sound quality but to my ears they sound fine. Instruments come through the speakers they are supposed to come through so that ended up not to be a concern. My sound system consists of older model Klipsch Loudspeakers and those familiar with them are aware that they are horn loaded. Considering my taste in music is primarily acoustic Jazz, Paul Desmond's playing comes through as lush as can be.
This is not to say that Brubeck or Eugene Wright or Joe Morello don't shine on these recordings. All involved are in top form.

It was a real treat to see each disc in the sets are housed in a replica of the original record sleeve. Matter of fact when I unwrapped them they had the "used record and book store" smell. I know it was my nose playing tricks on me but nevertheless I could have swore I was out shopping for some used 33-1/3 classic vinyl.

These sets are the first ones I've gotten from Sony/Masterworks but considering the quality and the quantity and the ,I'm sure to be seeking out their other offerings.

I chose this item because I am crazy about jazz, in particular, Brubeck. I would recommend this to anyone who loves Brubeck.

I have to admit to this now being the only music I play in my car. Had a rough day? Play these CDs. The music is great, and very relaxing! (I'm trying to figure out how to get it into my Amazon Cloud Player for import to my Kindle Fires and my iPod.)

Enjoy!
